Come to think of it, I've seen arguments going both ways for how tonneau covers and also removing tailgates can affect gas mileage. Some believe they increase it, while others will argue it lowers it.
    Does anyone really know?

I’ve seen those too. I don’t think there is a real way to test because it would be so little either way.

I've always stuck the dots to the back of the deflector because I didn't want to stick them on the paint either

That's only if you have it properly paired with the scoop...

another thought is paint protection film. I had it installed on my car when new years ago. hood, from bumper and side mirrors.
takes care of rock chips and hard water stains.

Paint looked brand new when i sold car after 6 years.
The place I went for install had Ferraris and Porsches in the queue

I never had a tonneau cover on any truck in the past. This was my first tacoma, and my first tonneau cover. Only thing i can say is i average around 23 mpg, give or take .5 mpg. I'm guessing its pretty close to whats claimed. For what its worth, the cover doesn't seem to hurt performance in the least. Truck is noticeably faster than a buddies 2019 trd double cab that does not have a cover.

This went on today (Weathertech). Easy install, just screw down both ends first so all the holes line up. 10-15 min.
