That is why I bought the 3M Clear bra, so that wouldn't happen. :D the 3M package you have the option to buy with the truck, well worth the money spent.

The Weathertech one doesnt touch anything except the bottom. There is a fairly large gap between the gaurd and the actual hood surface. I have no problems with mine, like it a lot actualy. Had one on my 98 3/4 ton chevy that touched and dicked up the paint. I think your good with weathertech!

So what happens to the 3M film when it takes a stone at 60MPH? They are great to potect from the sand blasting affect. But they don't do well with flying stones.

WeatherTech does also. Id say either is good as long as they dont have the little rubber "just in case" bumpers touching the hood or the sticky tape kind...you'd be fine. WeatherTech is made in Germany and I can tell you that when it comes to automobiles ....Germans have thier shiz together on that. Cant build a house worth a crap but they know cars!

When you say "bottom", do you mean the underside of the hood? I would love to get the weathetech deflector, but dont want to damage the paint, just in case I ever decide to remove it.

Does it feel like a solid, quality piece? Did the mounting holes line up easily?

Any feedback on this item is greatly appreciated.

Hey LI55; I see you live in Long Island, I'm guessing it still snows there as it does in Ohio. When I had my bug guard on it was a PIA to remove snow, I couldn't use the natural slope of the hood and just push it off the front. I had to either push it to the far side or pull it to my feet. The OEM guard WILL damage you paint along the leading edge fold of the hood. I think the WeatherTech is attached by drilling holes on the underside of the same fold. I guess as long as you seal up the exposed metal after drilling you shouldn't have a problem with rust.

I vote yes, but I've been putting deflector's on my trucks for years. It's your truck... what you like is what matters.

The weathertech uses holes already there on the underside of the hood, so no drilling required. The paint is what I am worried about. I called weathertech and she said it doesnt touch the truck, but they do provide some sort of material to protect your hood. Not sure what that means.

Does it flex in the wind and hit the hood? If this is the case I would rather go without it, but if its a nice stiff piece and doesn't touch the hood I would like to use it.

Great point about the snow. I didnt think about that.

I have a Weathertech on my 2011 DC. As already stated no drilling, uses existing holes on underside of hood. The holes could have lined up a little better as I had to fiddle with it some to get it mounted. Other than that installation was very simple. The hood protection she referenced consists of 4 clear rubber nubs which are adhesive backed for attaching to the hood. There is a substantial gap between the deflector and the hood. I applied some pressure to it and it didn't come close to touching the hood. It's only been on a couple of weeks. Leaving today on first road trip in the Taco, Seattle to Salt Lake. Should be a good test, will post up after trip.

Glad you were able to get some input from those who actually own the WeatherTech as I wasn't sure of the mounting technique. I do like the look of the deflector. I guess I'm just anal about the snow issue, case in point, I debated about installing the OEM roof rack until I learned that the cross bars could be disconnected on one end and stowed in line with the rails on each side. This allows me to push snow off the back or front easily.

I'm kinda tossed up about getting a bug shield or that toyota clear protective film. Like the look of the bug shield but I can always add one later be it OEM or aftermarket. But if I was to get the film I would want that done before I pick up the truck from the dealer.
This may sound like a stupid question, but if I were to get the film can I add the bug deflector later or would it have an issue mounting? Plus would it help with the marring issue I keep reading about with the OEM deflector?

Don't get the oem one! Get one that mounts under the hood that doesn't touch the paint on top and doesn't use metal brakets. The film will help but the metal clips will still wear through over time. The shields that Cabela's puts their name on (not sure of the brand) mount under the hood...very nice and a couple different models to choose from. Here's a link showing the full wrap, they also have a low profile...

I don't know if anyone suggested this already but since it serves a function but kind of breaks up the flow of the body panels maybe try color matching the oem one as a test and if it looks good do the nicer version color matched impulse red so that it blends in
