Hello TacomaWorld! Below is my 2016 DC OR. So far 9 months and 7700 miles without any issues!

Now, that I've owned my Tacoma for several months I'm ready to start my build.
Currently I'm living in Tulsa, OK. However, this summer my fiancé and I will be relocating to San Diego as she's accepting a travel RN position. We're really excited to be making the move to the West Coast. Years back, I was stationed in Twentynine Palms as a young Marine and spent a lot of time between Twentynine Palms and San Diego. I fell in love with the West while stationed in California. The topography is diverse, extreme, and beautiful. It's also nice to know there are so many TW members in and around San Diego and the Southwest!

On to the build! The purpose of the build is to create a Tacoma that allows my fiancé and I to hit the road, explore, and return. What we're aiming for is something practical and functional. We plan to hit the road to explore places like Death Valley, Anzo-Borrego, Sedona, Big Sur, Joshua Tree, Sequoia, Yosemite, Big Bear, etc.

We will be sleeping in the Tacoma. So, this week I'm ordering a Softopper because I love the flexibility it gives you. So, because we will be sleeping in the truck bed, I'll be fabricating a sleeping platform with two storage drawers beneath. The two drawers will hold my recovery kit, a small tool kit, camping gear, water, our trail packs, clothes, etc. I will be upgrading my tires to either the ST Maxx or KO2 in 265/75r16 (E Rated...only because the C Rated tires are so limited in that size and usually only come in a 2 ply sidewall construction). I don't want to go any bigger than 265/75r16.

My question is regarding load management. Do you guys feel for the added weight that I should do a lift like OME or just something simple like airbags?!? I do like to hit the trails, but she is my daily driver and we will spend a lot of time on the highway from destination to destination. Your advise and feedback is greatly appreciated!

Just my opinion because I'm a 1st gen owner, but I think the lift from the factory is perfect.

I honestly think the only thing gained by a lift is owner appeal. You won't get a better ride or be able to go thru deeper mud.

I've always thought Tacoma owners were smart about their investments. Why would you purposely try to depreciate your purchase? You will never get the money back spent on the lift. Tacomas already sell stupid fast used, so saying it will sell faster with a lift is a non issue.

If you get any squat in the rear, Air bags will be the best way to level out the truck.

Again, just my opinion, so don't be too harsh on me.

Btw kudos on the soft topper. I love mine on my Tundra. I've driven all over the east side of the US with mine. Zero issues.IMG_20160409_101604.jpg

I'd go with a single add-a-leaf. The stock springs squat with very little weight.

I'd also look for a C-rated tire. E-rated rides like shit. KO2's are great tires, I'm on my third set, and I think they have a C-rated 265/75r16, which will clear stock.

Yup, I completely understand what you're saying. I'm not knocking anyone who decides to go that route. But, I feel a rear locker and a good tire will get you a long way. Thanks for the advise, I will stick to an airbag system.

You my friend make too much sense, especially when talking about 3rd gens or being a part of TW.

This is where I get hung up. I really do want to stay with a C rated tire. But, correct me if I'm wrong, I was only able to find an E rated KO2 in 265/75r16. I did find a Duratrac, Toyo AT2, and Cooper AT3 in 265/75r16 in a C rating.

Thanks man. I'm really excited to get it this week, I've heard nothing but great things about it. Looks good on your Tundra!

    I consider myself a 1.5 gen owner.

1st gen Tacoma and a 2nd gen Tundra owner.

I embarrassingly call myself a 3rd gen owner, though I have owned them all.

All loaded up, just a touch over 8k. It's only a 27 footer.
