    Morning Maner,

This is the best thread for this question,

Yesterday I thrashed my rig on some washboard fire roads. Fun AF

If I have a failure in a shock, will it always leak? So I can expect oil residue for a tell tail sign of something wrong?

I am sure nothing is wrong with my rig, but I will eventually break something and want to know wtf to look for.:bananadead:

They'll either leak, blow a hole through it or snap. Washboard will overheat the shock and cause oil retention to fail.

I saw your post about the temperatures those rear shocks were scorching hot.
If you see oil residue yes the shock has been compromised and will eventually fail. You will experience a bouncy or rough ride.
But what can happen is with that type of use the gases/oil inside the shock will heat up and basically aerate meaning turns into bubbles and is unable to provide any dampening. I’m sure you noticed the truck got real soft and squishy feeling when this happens you need to stop and let the shocks cool off. Doesn’t mean you have a failure yet but repeated times doing that will expedite the possible failure.

This is something else I wanted to bother you guys about.

Actual temperatures the problems can start to occur. Since I always have my FLIR camera in my pocket on my cell phone, I use it all the time.

'Scorching hot' means it has to feel hot on your wrist? Just like you test a babies milk bottle. 50C was the hottest I saw on my shock body. I touched it with my wrist and I could keep my wrist pressed against it with no pain.

    50C seemed ok?

Maybe I am getting a little to specific as no one else will have this crap I have to check the actual temps of things?

'Stop and let them cool off' yes yes this is what I am trying to figure out. Exact temps I can be running, and when they need to cool off.

That’s a little to specific for my lack of knowledge. But a shock usually is warm but if it’s what you feel hot to the touch like a plate out of the microwave I’d take it easy. I’ve had shock fade before and I could feel the heat radiating off of it. That was enough to let me know to let it cool off. I experienced the bouncy ride and this was in summer so that may have some effect on it as well.

Ok so at 50C there was no shock fade on my Billie 5100's

This is the exact knowledge I needed. Thnx Matt.

I've been up my hood under water, pre-snorkel, at the Clear Creek crossing on Turkey Run at Fort Hood.
