I don't think they have anything to worry about. Dealers (and other businesses) have been operating like this since the beginning of time, and they'll continue to. A truckload of enthusiasts won't shut them down, because we (lots of us) don't use them to begin with.

Think the internet is a new variable, everyone and there dog looks up places online and leaves review, plus things like Carvana. Also a lot of dealers used to enjoy the "only game in town" effect. You can literally buy a car from anywhere, won't be long before the middleman(dealer) is cut out entirely.

I don't disagree with you, but I think its also important to realize that reviews are severely throttled, and can be manipulated to reflect what the business wants to reflect. If the dealer wants to pay for the entire first page on a web search to show exactly what they want it to show, they absolutely can. As far as all the other 3rd party resellers, I don't know the process well enough, but I imagine if Toyota manufacturing wants to stay in business, they allocate X-amount of units to Toyota dealers, and places like Carvana won't get a brand new unit. My main point though, the businesses with the most money manipulate the markets however they want. I don't think they're dying out anytime soon (even though I fully support never taking my vehicle to them for services).

Think its more economical for toyota to back something like carvana than a dealer ship franchise, You can replace an entire dealer sales staff with pay/benefits/commission, with one guy behind a computer who probably doesn't even get a commission. 5 or 10 guys could do sales for a whole state.

Again, I don't disagree lol. But you always have to look at things from both perspectives. There are many reasons why even a small business buys a storefront. Property and staffing that property has lots of business benefits; otherwise, most of the world could just work from home. Its all about money.

There's a good dude on Twitter to follow for car stuff. TheCarGuy

Last week (?) he tweeted that GM offered to buy out all the Buick dealers. Buick isn't going away. The idea is dealers are and GM will sell direct. IIRC Ford was looking to do the same thing for EV's. It's coming - dealers aren't going to last as we currently know them.

IMO - there will likely be a push by OEM's to go to more of a Carvana experience with "Authorized Service Centers" which will basically be the dealerships of today. Dealerships probably make more off used cars and service/parts than they do new car sales anyway.

It gets the OEM paid retail price instead of wholesale pricing (brewery tap rooms vs selling to a distributor line of thought) and removes the #1 complaint about car dealerships - dealing with salesmen/purchase process. There's NO GOOD REASON why it takes 3-4 hours to buy a damned car. Too much BS.

I can buy $163k S American Silver dollars on Amazon - you can buy a 45k truck off a Toyota website. That's not a barrier.

Just don't go to dealerships, there will always be suckers who do it for basic maintenance. Yelp reviews aren't going to bring down dealerships lol

It seems highly impractical to me to build your engine starting with a 2gr-fks block. You are sure to spend 10x or more individual parts than buying a fully assembled new engine. Unless this is a hobby project, I think a used engine is a better option.

Appreciate you listing the part numbers….
Do you know if these are plug-&-play or will they need to be machined specifically for the 2GR-FKS

The same STEALERship after they told me it wasn’t their problem the engine blew up with an extra quart of oil in it,
quoted me for a JDM engine replacement……. 4000.00 + Install
    40-50k mileage & 90 day guarantee.

Also quoted me for a Jarco Remanufactured
    Engine…… 14,808 Installed
(Was told by Toyota service tech NOT to add a supercharger to this unit) Which has been the plan with this build from the beginning.

Also a quote for a “factory new” short block
assembly, installed, without the heads checked or resurfaced…… 9841.00
(more $$$$ if the heads have to go out for machining.)

I bought this truck with the intention of it serving me like the two Toyotas I owned prior to this (85’ custom & 04’ dbl-OR) and Unfortunately I’ve got myself in a situation I can’t get out of. The truck is too nice to not put an engine back in it & On the flipside of that coin, it will never be worth the amount of money I’m about to put into it…..between a new engine and what I paid for it to begin with i’m going to have to keep this thing till I die lol
Have been nothing short of rigorous with the maintenance on this truck changing oil every 5000 to 7000 miles & Doing every goddamn dealer scheduled maintenance that came up, So since I’m in for a penny…..I’m in for a pound, I’m going to have to see this engine build through…. As much as I don’t want to.
I would’ve liked to put a 4.0 in as a replacement with all the bells and whistles but I don’t have the time to research what it would take to make that happen or a place to wrench that isn’t a gravel driveway….

And Toyota in all their infinite wisdom, does not offer a factory complete engine for replacement

There is video series on YouTube that received a long thread on here that is about a guy replacing a 3rd gen taco engine with a used one. I can’t find it right now.

    Which part?
Those are all the figures off of the spreadsheet that the dealership gave me after they told me that the blown engine I had in my truck was my problem not theirs.

I don’t fully understand that paperwork, but it sounds like they quoted you for a new engine plus installation. Personally I wouldn’t put a brand new engine in a truck with 161k miles, but I also live in a place where automobiles tend to rust away. Have you looked into used engines? Another option is to part it out and buy a new truck.

Was it the video of the salvage truck he bought that was completely toasted, 3rd Gen Access cab, Magnetic Gray….. rode hard and put away wet??? Tall blonde haired kid?
I watched a few trying to get a handle on what I might be dealing with here in the near to immediate future.

Yes the one that looked like it was used as a crack house.
