So in my original plan I have the sensors attached to the back of the screen via some little stand-off pins. But the sensors and the screen both have thru-holes so you could just solder wires to both and put them wherever you want! The software does allow you to zero out the incline so if you don't mount it perfectly flat you'll be okay.

Very cool. Always wanted to swap a FJ pod into my truck but you couldnt be sure on the tipover degree being the same. I wonder how to calculate it

The screens I'm using so far are white on black but I can also get my hands on red on black, yellow on blue and black on green. I've also found one that uses an RGB backlight so you can change the background color to pretty much whatever you want, but I haven't tried interfacing that to my software yet.

hahaha Yeah I was thinking about that...if you had a really tall jack and a few friends you could jack up one side of the car and put a few people on the other side (or attach some straps to the far side and have the people on the same side as the jack pulling them tight). Jack it up until it's just about tipping over (the friends are making sure it doesn't) and you'll know! You should probably be sitting in the driver's seat when you're doing it so you have the proper weight you'd have out on the trail.

    Nice job!

I'm definitely interested in one if you make them.

Regarding the lawsuit with the unit not beeping in time. If it's an option that can be turned on/off, ship the unit with it off and no preset value. That way the user has to turn it on and has to enter their own warning value so that it is in no way your responsibility since every vehicle will be different.

    Update!

I got the custom circuit board and found that I need to make a couple of wiring changes to it. Unfortunately the turn around time on getting new ones is a couple of weeks. :( But all the kinks should be ironed out and after that I can buy a bunch in bulk.

While I was testing the boards I also found a new sensor that has everything I need, plus some, all in one package: accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and barometer. The magnetometer means I should be able to add a compass! And this one board will end up being cheaper than the two separate ones I'm currently using. That sensor should be here in a couple of days so I'll be able to test it and make sure everything works as expected.

But the big news is that this thing will be upgradeable! All of the software that's reading the sensors and updating the display is on a single chip. I'm going to mount the chip in a socket that allows it to be removed. So if/when I update the software in the future you'll have two options:

    • Remove the chip and place it in a little chip programmer I'm putting together. The programmer costs a few bucks but then you can download any new software updates and reprogram the chip from your computer for free forever.
    • If you're not comfortable reprogramming yourself you can just buy a new chip with the software already installed. These are actually pretty cheap, hopefully less than $10. But, you'd have to buy another chip each time you want the software update.
This is the main reason I'm really excited about this new multi-sensor I'm getting since it will have future capabilities I haven't even thought of yet. But as I do everyone will be able to get them without buying a whole new unit.

After all this I hope this thing will be worth the wait! :)

P.S. After I get this next batch of circuit boards back I should be able to get the beta units out.

I have wanted to undertake this project for awhile!.
If you need any testers with Arduino programming skills let me know. I have tinkered with a temp/ barometer sensors as well as led configurations before on the Uno R3 board.
