OP , is there a smoke chamber at the chimney throat or is the firebox ceiling flat ?

Today I did a little more work on the arch, got the keystone put in and one side of the arch started.
Also completed the mantle, got the rocks laid out on the top, and mortared in the ones on the right side of the top. The ones on the left are in place waiting to be mortared in. A freak thunderstorm popped up just as I finished the top right side.

Last update before Hurricane Irene. Getting ready for the storm, I got the top of the bottom section all sealed up, finished off the top of the chimney, and water-tight sealed the gap between the chimney block and the chimney flue. I took the black cap off after I took this picture because I don't want it becoming a projectile. Water can only now go directly into the firebox where it will then run back out the front, so no damage will be done hopefully.
Oh, and I also completed the arch this morning.
    Stay safe everyone!

The fireplace is now officially a waterplace. The water seems to have reached a peak, so that's something. The brook is normally around 7 feet wide, and the fireplace was about 10 feet from it. It's now sitting in roughly 8" of water. Of course I built it further away than the brook has ever risen, but nobody expected this. The brook has never been this high, ever that we know of.

Thanks...the water has gone up another inch or so, but as long as the ground doesn't erode away too much it should be fine.

You are building one nice fireplace. I had to hide this thread when the wife came in the room. I already have enough projects.

It's been 7 weeks since we poured the concrete slab it sits on.

Meanwhile...the water made it up into the firebox at one point, but although the brook is still a raging river, the waters have retreated back into it's banks. The lower lawn is covered with river silt, but the fireplace survived with no damage!
I'm going to have to fill in around the slab on the backside where the ground washed out, and clean the crap out of the firebox, but that's it.

Oh, and in the background you can see a huge tree spanning the brook. It washed down from upstream somewhere and got lodged right before the fireplace area.
