Thanks everyone, it did feel pretty good to see how well it stood up to the flood. Now I know I don't have to worry if this happens again.

Brutalguy, I am right on the border of southern VT/NH.

Moving on. I started putting the river rocks on the exterior. I also installed this granite plaque that I had made special order for this project to commemorate the year it was built.

DONE!! I finished putting the rocks on yesterday, and this morning I gave it an acid wash to get the white mortar film off. Here are are few before and after pics from today:

    BEFORE ACID WASH

    AFTER ACID WASH
    [IMG]

    BEFORE

    AFTER

As you can see, the acid wash makes a huge difference, with a much cleaner look after. The rest of the pics are all after the wash:

For anyone that is interested, the acid I used was Phosphoric Acid, mixed 4 parts water to 1 part acid. NOTE: always add acid to water, not water to acid or it can blow up in your face!! Once I mixed it, I put it in a garden watering can with a sprinkler and sprinkled it onto the fireplace, starting at the top and working my way down. The acid will immediately begin to eat away at the mortar film and it will hiss and make a foam. Kinda cool and kinda scary too. I was sure to wear chemical goggles and chemical gloves before I started.

Things I've learned or found to be important:

This takes a LOT of time and money. The trips to the home stores never seemed to end, nor did the early mornings mixing mortar and putting it all together. I feel kind of like a kid on the first day of summer now and don't know what to do with all my free time. :D

Use string guides to keep your rows straight and even, or you WILL make a mess of things before you know it.

Refractory mortar is VERY expensive, $56 per bag vs $4.58 per bag of regular mortar. But, the joints are very thin when using refractory mortar, so it goes a lot farther.

Use gloves. I always did, but I kept using the same pair and last weekend I got a nasty cement burn on my right fingers from the mortar residue that had built up. A cement burn is a chemical reaction of the mortar on your skin. It has healed mostly, but you don't want to experience it, trust me.

Be sure to include a smoke chamber above the firebox, this is where the smoke and fire roll around before they exit out the chimney. If you don't, the smoke and flames will come out the front of the fire box instead of the chimney, and you will be very pissed.

Lots more I'm sure, but those are some of the highlights.

This is just a slab for my shed to go on. Poured it 1/2 regular quikcrete and 1/2 Pro Finish Crack resistant. The mixer saved my butt... .6cu yds of the stuff woulda been hell to mix any other way.
I'm a dummy and forgot the before photos. Just think grass and fence. And then think 6 inch 85"x85" hole...Then think 2 inches of drainage rock and the form.

Thanks for the inspiration!!! I might try an outdoor fireplace in the spring....Seeing how easy this slab was to lay...

Looks good, looks like you used the same type of remesh that I did?

I'm not gonna lie though, the slab was the easiest part of the project.

Yeah..That was the 84x48 cut remesh from Home Depot.
This slab had me worried...Looking at the pile of 28 bags of concrete-I was like "WTF have I gotten myself into..."
