I'm learning alot about how houses are built in other areas of the country.

 

New BC Building Code Rain Screen Requirement


The new 2006 BC Building Code has been released and among the changes, is a new requirement for a capillary break (rain screen).

Any building permits issued after December 15, 2006 by most B.C. municipalities west of Hope and on Vancouver Island will require the installation of a 10mm capillary break between the cladding and building paper or wrap.

A capillary break basically encompasses the use of wood furring strips or a positive drainage material. Products are available primarily for use on wood or fibre cement siding while others are specifically for stucco, stone, and other masonry applications. But what does a capillary break do?

A capillary break allows moisture to drain behind the cladding, lets air dry any excess moisture, and restrains the ability of water droplets to ”bridge” from the back of the cladding to the building wrap or through any penetrations in the system.

This means the walls in our buildings will be drier and much less susceptible to water penetration and moisture-related problems.

 

Bet that keeps the possibility of mold down as well.

Oz I bet you are not inexpensive but I will take better looking and built right over low cost any day of the week.

Yeah, I get all that, we're doing a rain screen system on a project I'm working on how (the screen is actually Alaskan Yellow Cedar, nice stuff). Just a terminology difference, we refer to the outter layer as the rain screen, not the whole system (so in the case of a house, the siding would be the rain screen) then there's the cavity wall with some sort of spacer to make the capillary break and allow air flow (and pressure equilization with the interior supposedly). The system we're building now actually has a really screwy vapor barrier and retarder system so we'll see how it works out...

 

Drywall started this morning. i'll go get some pics later today.

 

You any good at taping? That's one thing I've never gotten good at. I like hanging drywall, hate taping.

I'm only good at hanging it, but i'm slow. I suck at taping and mudding. I'll leave it to the professionals.

 

Speaking of professionals. Down here in SoCal I know a guy who knows a guy who is an uncle to the guy and his name is Pedro. He doesn't need a mud bucket or even a spatula. I've seen him mud a whole house with minimal sanding. He plops the mud on his forearm and goes to town....
