So today started a new issue with my truck that i’ve never experienced before. I used 4wd Hi and Low off and on a couple times yesterday with no issue and this morning with no issue. Then this afternoon two separate times in which i wanted to use it, i had to shut the ignition completely off, turn the knob, then turn the truck back on and it would automatically shift into 4wd. Now, it will come out of it just fine….but every single time i want to go INTO 4wd, i have to shut the truck off and turn it back on. Very frustrating.

    That is super frustrating.

I’ve had it happen a few times in the past where the 4x4 hi wouldn’t engage when I turned the knob, or it wouldn’t go back to 2wd after being in 4 hi.

It’s been a while since it’s happened but I feel like when I was researching the issue, I found some TW posts saying that it can happen after driving through water. Could that be a factor? I also could be misremembering.

Im having that too. But 4lo beeps at me. Im going to more expensive route, and replacing my tcase.

Doesn't it state in the manual that 4wd needs to be used monthly to keep it lubed?

But is your new one truly manual or is it just a lever that does the same thing as the electronic switch like my 4runner used to?

Its from a FJC/4runner. Truly manual shifting. I will need to rewire the electrics to have the lights working, but manually shift from 2H to 4H and 4L

I'm pretty rusty on this stuff, but when you shift into 4Hi the light will blink while it's waiting on the ADD sensor to say it's engaged. I suspect it is also waiting on a sensor from the Tcase. Since shutting it off and back on works it sounds like the solenoids are working and the ADD and Tcase are engaging but they are not getting the signal back to the computer. It sounds like the sensors are also working unless possibly turning it off and back on bypasses them somehow (I kinda doubt it though).

While doing an oil change friday night i found that my driver’s side caliper has a sticking piston that is causing the in board pad to drag. So now its time for new calipers, pads, and rotors.

i investigated going to 5th gen 4runner brakes. Determined that it was not worth the extra $200-250 for under 10% of POTENTIAL stopping power gain. The rotors are considerably heavier at 21lbs vs 18.5lbs. So unsprung weight nearly negates the potential performance gain in the larger bore of the pistons and larger pad surface area. The brake pads are the same part number so you gain almost NOTHING. Plus its just too much shit to mess with this close to winter.

I ordered new stoptech rotors. Now i need to find pads and choose calipers. I’m leaning towards napa calipers as those are what i put on my 3rd gen 4runner and they were great
