i'd say put the bullet back in the hole, leave it, and figure out a way so that it won't come out and you can have a very custom hood ornament
    OR
clear it like you said and leave it at that

Terminal velocity of a bullet returning to earth after being fired straight up, is only about 300-400 FPS....probably not fast enough to poke a hole in the hood like that....would have just dented it...Like a hail stone.

It was probably fired straight down from high up.

That had to have been a couple hundred yards away.

Hell, just shooting steel with FMJ 9mm at 100yds, deforms the shit out of the bullet.

400 FPS is plenty fast enough to break open the very light gauge sheet metal that Tacoma hoods are made from. Notice I said break open and not penetrate? The standard 45 ACP military round only moves at about 860 FPS at the muzzle and I've seen these penetrate both sides of a 55 gallon oil drum at 50 yards with ease.

Looks like an up-in-the-air shot to me. Do a google on NEW ORLEANS NEW YEARS EVE GUN FIRE and you'll get plenty of info on bullet damage and injuries caused by idiots shooting guns up in the air. This has been going on for decades down there.

if i remember correctly, a 9 mil wouldn't do too much damage...or am i getting this confused with dropping a penny from the Empire State Building?

Speed is only half it, the other half is mass. 860 FPS, 45 cal is a lot of power, 860 FPS BB pellet isn't nearly as substantial. 400 FPS is fast but the mass will determine how much damage it could potentially cause.

Not what I wanted to hear.
Although the consensus seems to be that it was fired straight up in the air...

    To answer a few questions.
A gun cannot be brought into Boston or Lynn without writing a letter to the chief of police and then having a meeting at the police station. I've never been through the process so don't know more than that. Instead I left my guns with friends and family out of state.

As far as the truck is concerned, I'm probably going to clear coat it as suggested. The bullet has been confiscated for evidence so no chance of using it to fill the hole. Prolly just put a dab of sealant in there or something to seal the hole. Amazing shot really. If it was a little more to the left it would have gone into the engine bay. The bullet was thwarted by the cross bracing under the hood.

Off to the insurance adjuster to get an estimate right.....NOW.

We had so iraqis shooting in the air at the start of ramandon in 07 a 7.62 came back down and punched a hole in one of our cans (basicly a tin trailer we live in) it looked the same way and they were shooting like an 1/8 a mile away
