You can expect to be completely disappointed in yourself for wasting your money on a K&N intake and Bully Dog tuner.

    Both do effectively nothing.

Go out and drive your truck right now. That is exactly how it will feel with the intake and tuner

Really I notice the intake when I'm on the highway as far as loudness and acceleration... I've heard different for the bully dog

Placebo almost guaranteed. You might hear it more but the gains you might see are basically negligible if not non existent at all

That's the sound tricking you. Your "acceleration" has not improved, if anything you're just mashing it a bit harder than before because you like the sound.

This. K&N are actually somewhat junk. Biggest mistake purchase I have made on any car (luckily not the Taco)

The restriction on airflow is mostly in the catalytic converters..

These engines are already pretty damn efficient in terms of pumping air. Toyota is not going to put all this time and effort into their vvt-i systems just to choke them off with a crappy filter design.. think about it, toyota engineers are acutely aware of where the restrictions are in the engine. They lie awake at night thinking about how to squeeze every last amount of efficiency out of these engines. If theu could pick up a few horsepower and a few mpgs by changing intake design they would have already done it

There really aren't any cheap power adding options.. if your serious about going faster , buy a supercharger!

yes, and no. Yes, they are trying to make the most efficient* system.

*= most efficient within a confined budget and noise consideration. They want it to be quiet, and cheap, while still being efficient.

That being said, they did a great job on the Tacoma.

The K&N only smooths out a few spots, worth only a few HP at best.

Back in the day guys were able to "tune" engines and magically get power out of them.. all they were doing was increasing airflow (bigger carbs, headers) and optimizing spark timing.. but they had to choose if they wanted a quiet car that would idle in the drive thru or a big beast that could lay down rubber and drag race.. theu couldnt have both. Spark Timing was fixed, you had to decide what cam you wanted, etc.

Now, all that stuff is controlled by the pcm while driving! It's kind of impressive.. spark timing, valve timing, etc is constantly adjusting to match whatever you are asking for. You can stomp on it and pass people on the highway or you can idle in the ferry waiting line with minimal tailpipe emissions, no smell and the engine is purring like a kitten..

The 1GR responds very well with N/A bolt-on power adders.

Certain N/A intakes make a noticeable improvement over stock. Old news. Link in my sig. Pages of documentation. With the right mods, the N/A 1GR will make more whp and wtq, than a bolt on TRD/Magnuson S/C. All which improve that component's efficiency as well.

The stigma cold air intakes is always based off of one dude finding one intake video where it made no noticeable gain on a vehicle not related. Thus all other systems and engines MUST be the same.

All pumps are not created equally. Nor are their constituent components.

A lot is left on the table from what the engineers started with. They just gave us the platform to build upon.

This is exactly the reason I don't believe any significant gains have been proven.

Unless someone dynos their truck before, replaces their intake tube and filter with super mega badass aftermarket intake and takes another run on the dyno....it's all speculation based on a random dudes truck on a random shops random dyno.

Has anybody actually performed a base run on their own truck and an after run with an aftermarket intake? Like, same truck, same dyno, same day/week?

Like you insinuated, not all systems and engines are the same so any other type of testing is inaccurate just like the example of the guy not gaining any power from an intake.

If you crank in more air with an open intake you need to crank in more fuel as well. The mass air flow will generally do a good job of this but you also need to unrestrict the exhaust and get a proper air to fuel ratio tune to gain any kind of power. An air intake if anything will make it run leaner which will make it feel like it's running more powerful. For every action there is a reaction. There really isn't a difference in dealing with the 4.0 v6 or a little Honda crf50 engine. They are both air breathers and they operate the same way. Suck, squeeze, bang, blow.
