Do you all think bullying is as bad as the media presents it to be or has it been politically correct to crusade against it. When I was growing up we all called it picking on each other.

I think the difference between bullying when I grew up and now is the internet. Before, if you got bullied in school, you left for the day and were away from it. Now, it follows you on social media and, as we're aware of on this forum, people get a lot bigger mouths when they're behind a keyboard. I do think it's gotten worse because kids these days don't seem to have the same consequences we did, or even the fear of consequences. I think there's 2 problems, the parents of the bullies refuse to admit their kid is a little shit and needs some discipline and the parents of the bullied who need to get their kids off the internet.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Social media allows it to continue at home... and don't get me started on parents... I had a mother tell me once that I'm a piece of shit because her son was driving drunk and he is just a kid and that I didn't need to arrest him... I don't understand where the whole "my kid can do no wrong" mindset comes from... If that were me, my mom and dad would have killed me...

For whatever reason there is no more discipline...

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
It's definitely different, but I don't know if the media gives an accurate portrayal.

Used to be when I was a kid, two things applied - you could eventually get your hands on the bully and beat him and when you went home for the day, you were pretty much done with the bully.

The 'net lets bullies be far more intense/invasive, and they can keep it up 24/7, at least be electronic means.

So it's different. But the universal solution still applies. My kid can throw a mean right cross. And if I ever catch my kid doing stupid shit, a whoopin' is coming shortly thereafter, commensurate with the level of 'stupid' involved.

+1 on social media changing things up.

Kids used to be able to have their school yard fights over bullying as long as nobody was seriously hurt it wash handled at the school level. Now i see the fights getting more serious, large groups jumping single victims etc. You also see parents getting involved in a negative way, parents joining in on bullying, plus parents who say "not my kid". I also think kids are scared of getting in trouble for fighting back, no more simple school yards fights, many schools adopted a zero tolerance policy, so if a victim does decide to defend themself both get punished. Also now with police in schools you see kids catching criminal charges for school yard fights that used to be forgotten about by the end of the school day.

The other problem is that, as a parent, you are much more limited in the punishments you can give to your child. Its even worse if you are a step parent. The kids know this as well.

Yes, parents cant discipline the little bastards like before. Now if they go to school with a scratch on them school administrators are forced to make reports for child abuse.

It's different now with Internet and social media. When someone caught you doing for example, something embarrassing; 20 people might find out. Now, very one knows. Within 15 minutes. And there's photos and video. That's just one small aspect.

Also kids need to harden the fuck up.

...the anti-"bullying" crusade is yet another misguided social justice / social engineering campaign by the LSM and entertainment-media complex... "we must do something" ...it's always "for the children"... ...the continued attack on traditional family values induces the very societal ills manifesting before our eyes today...

I was the only immigrant non English speaking skinny as Asian kid in school when I first came to this country. The shit I got was as bad as it gets. But back then there were no Internet and socal media, if there were it would probably been 10X worst.

I was just told that one of my kids was bullying someone the other day in grade school, since the other kid was bothering him and my boy told him to shut up and leave him alone. Now that kid's feelings were hurt.

Parents today want to be their kids friend & umm...not a parent.

The days of ass whippins & groundings that I got seem to be over for many kids/teenagers in todays time?

    Damn shame too...

I think (agree with others who said) a reason bullying is at an all-time is high because teaching your kids it's OK to (physically) defend themselves is at an all-time low
Which, is pretty directly related to parents being taught it's not OK to discipline their kids (again, physically)

50/60 years ago there was an Andy Griffith episode where Opie was getting bullied; Andy told him the next time it happens: beat the stuffing out of him... and he did...

That's completely unheard in the "new morality" of American culture; and doing such a thing would probably get the parent thrown in jail, get the kid thrown out of school, and get that television series thrown off the air
