Bumper and Winch Options

I'm new to the Tacoma world, but I've been fabricating all sorts of things for well all sorts of things.

So far for bumpers for the 3rd Gen Tacoma's I haven't seen anything I like (something that functionally is strong but that doesn't weight 1/2 a ton.

I'm looking for peoples input on what they'd like to see in a front and rear bumper for 3rd gens.
I plan on starting fabrication in the next few weeks. I may produce plans if people are interested enough.

Currently have a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport. 3" Front Lift, 2" rear, sitting on 275 75 R 18 Renegade M/T's mounted on Method 18x9 Wheels w/ a -12 offset. Plastidipped Grille with 32" LED light bar mounted inside. LED Headlights & Fogs.

I Have the Smittybilt x20 12k winch with synthetic rope. Wireless controller. Love it.

 

I'd like to see some rear bumpers that support BSM

 

C4 Fab makes a BSM compatible bumper but I do not like their design.

RCI mounts the BSM low on the bumper which I am concerned about and theirs also does not support tire swingout and jerry can holder.

Yup, not many options for what to do. That's why I've been dragging my feet on a design. What don't you like about the C4 design?

I read here that Ford mounts their BSM in their tail lights. I wonder if we can retro fit toyotas BSM into the taillights which would open up options for all bumper types.

 

Agreed - I dislike the angled plate also. Maybe I'm not seeing it, but what is the functional reason (other than "being different")?

 

Some things are EXTREMELY over priced.

Take a look at some of these bumpers. Half of them don't line up to the body so it looks like it could go on a ranger, Tacoma or most small pickups.

I have made thousands of things out of metal (grew up working in a high end machine shop) and agree price is warranted when things take time but not on a cookie cutter item like sliders, bumpers & especially not skid plates!

 

Draw once, Put a sheet of steel on a table press a button then grind, bend/roll, do you want it painted? 6 skid plates done!

 

Sounds like you have it all figured out. You should start your own company. You'll corner the market with all your built to order, perfectly fitting $200 bumpers and $50 sliders.

Truth is, there isn't a very big market for this stuff. If you were selling 100,000 of them a year you could divide your overhead over each item, your material cost would be way cheaper. Instead, volume is low. Have to charge more just to cover costs of buildings, equipment and employees. It doesn't get divided over a large quantity. Just one of those things I guess.

I agree with you on this point. Most aren't very attractive, but it doesn't reduce the amount of work involved in building it. We've spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to make them follow the body line and be attractive. It isn't easy with heavy gauge sheet metal.
