I bought this addicted offroad bumper off a 4runner. It was pretty rusty and had some nasty black house paint that had mostly peeled off. After alot of elbow grease i restored it back to life. Now im ready to install it and im not sure how to begin. I removed the oem bumpe, front skid plate and curved cross member already. Im not sure what else to remove or cut of the front of the truck to begin fabbing up the new cross member. I bought a 2x3-48"steel tube to begin designing a new cross member but im not sure if a C channel would work better. I do have access to a cutting wheel and can prob find a shop to help with the welding. If anyone is in the houston area id gladly pay for some tacoma enthusiast welding help. Any advise would be great.

Check out @cynicalrider build. Pretty sure I remember reading where he fabbed a cross member for that bumper.

First off. Those two protruding frame cans need to be unbolted.

Do the four bolts not match the holes? I'd say if not why don't you cut off the studs and start building off there, now Just weld it to where the curved bar was and build off there

@3rYODA, I tried to direct bolt on to the two protruding frame cans but they are different dimensions. The bumpers bolt holes are narrower than the frame can bolts.

Why do the cans need to be removed @License2Ill? If i remove them, what and how will i attach the crossmember?

Thanks for the quick response, im trying to finish this one of many projects before a trip to Colorado next month.

    Thank again.

You could contact Scotty and just buy the crossmember from him. Might make things a whole lot simpler. :notsure:

I had to take those frame cans off when I installed my trailgear bumper because it comes with this mounting crossmember type thing like this. Then you bolt the trailgear bumper onto that and you're done. These are Google images too. Just to explain. Not my truck. But this is what had to be done. GL!

You don't want the leverage of the weight of the bumper on those things if you want the bumper to stay attached to your vehicle. But it looks like you need the cross member that originally came with that bumper anyhow...

from the looks of it, the trailgear mountain plate might work. You can buy just the mountain plate alone. http://www.trail-gear.com/product/4716/rock-defense-tacoma-front-bumper-mounting-plate

Thanks guys, ive since removed the cans. After some measuring I think I am ready to start cutting and drilling the 2x3. The cross member will bolt up the the two bolt holes that were holding the cans. The two cans had a thinner cross member bridging across the cans that the skid plated bolted to. I guess I have to add some plate tabs for those bolts under the new cross member. I'm also going to bolt a plate tab to where the front skid plate bolted up to.confusing I know. I take some pics as I go. Thanks again

Ok so i mounted the cross member. Now i have to transfer bumber bolt holes to the crossmember and drill them out. The real challenge will be getting the nut on the inside of the tube to line up with the bolt through the bumper and crossmember. I thought about doing the same thing i did on the front and bore out a bigger hole but that process took forever for 2 bolts. The bumper has 6 total. I could just cut out some rectangular pieces out the back. That would give me enough room to tack weld the nuts on the inside of the tube also.

Have you placed the bumper on to the cross member to see how far out the bumper sticks?

Yes. I also put it up to the frame bolt holes to see if a C-channel would work better but the center tube arch his the truck body and would make fitting a winch impossible, I think. I want to install winch in the future but I'm not sure what type to go with. I won't be using it alot so I was thinking of buying one from harbor freight. What are yalls thoughts? How much weight rated winch should I buy?

^this will work, the bumper mount comes, with hardware needed for everything if you buy the mount you'll be set. The three holes will on you bumper will line up with the holes on the mount.

    @TacoSauce04
Since your making your own mount I'd make sure it's secured properly, the two bolts you currently have with the crossmember might hold your bumper up but it won't be safe, the bolts are in direct shear, utilize the threads in the circle with arrows going to it. Unbolt the hoop and use those as mounting points as well.

Thanks for the advise. I plan on welding the flat bar that is supporting the crossmember to the frame and to the crossmember. The flat bar is currently bolted behind that loop to the underside of the frame.
I wasnt planning on using those two side bolt holes but i see what your saying. Ill do some sketches to see if i can bolt in those 2 holes.

I bolted up the bumper. Im going to reinforce it with some more flat bar and welding. It should be roadworthy soon. Im also gonna spray the background paint and crossmember with POR black paint.
