I know...I could powdercoat, but I don't want to. I prefer paint so I can touch up as needed.

What I've used in the past is Rustoleum self-etching primer, several coats, and then several top coats of Rustoleum of whatever color.

Just curious what others are doing, or if you have any tips on better paint or anything to keep a finish longer.

Obviously, the sliders will have to be fixed up from time to time.

I have had very good results with the following. It leaves a nice textured finish that is very durable and easy to touch up down the road.

2 coats Krylon Red Oxide Primer

    2 coats Krylon Bed Coating

2 (or more) coats Rust-Oleum Professionals Enamel Semi Gloss Black (Satin looks nice also if you can find it)

Prep is by far the most important step. Make sure you get all the oils and grime off with mineral spirits before painting.
