My house got broken into last year, they kicked the entire back door in and the neighbors kid watched them (I quote him) "They were Running and struggling carrying things from your house but I thought you must have known them so I didn't do anything"

MY house now has a monitored alarm and even has a key fob remote, when it goes off the inside alarm sounds like a dozen smoke detectors going off and hurts the ears so bad nobody is going to want to hang around plus the outside siren can be heard for several blocks away.

Really if its an experienced burglar theyre gonna get in regardless. They had a show on the discovery channel a few years back where they would break into peoples houses and then make the house more secure. They would break into houses with alarms because they knew they had 15 mins before anyone came by. They would open the door and let dogs out or lock them in the basement. Neighbors would watch and do nothing. An alarm is good for teenage burglars but get some good insurance because if its someone who knows what they are doing they are getting in regardless just like car thieves.

The best way to protect your home and possessions is to live somewhere where people don't rip off your stuff. In my county there were three burglaries last year...count em...three, and one of them was a kid robbing his cheating soon-to-be ex girlfriend while she was banging some other dude. So, I guess there were only two legit burglaries last year.

You live in Vermont. There are probably 6 houses in your county. 3 out of 6 is horrible!

I have done some research on this, and if they really want in, they will get in or try. But you can always lessen your chance or odds of them trying and getting in.

Most will keep moving on if they see you have a security system, but some also know that most people don't always set their alarm systems. Especially if they are staying in town, like going to work or the store, etc.
But having a security system and posting up the banners and stickers can lessen the chance. Plus you should always use it, even if you're only going to the store for 10-15 min.

Having a dog is okay, but most dogs will do nothing but bark for a few minutes and then do nothing. Some robbers will give the dog food, and that usually shuts the dog up, or they will lock the dog in a room. But if you have an attack dog that knows what to do, it could work good. It could lessen your chance, but it would be better having an alarm, or both.

I would suggest an alarm, good locks on everything, 3M security film for all of the windows (very good stuff), fake cameras or real, motion lights, etc, etc. And if you're home, a good firearm is a must! But make sure to be careful and not shot your own family members. Just don't make it easy for them, and a house of opportunity.

And a lot of these guys are going after your identity, so make sure to get a good safe and bolt it to the ground and wall if possible. Put all of your identity type items in it, SSN, passports, birth certificate, etc, etc. I'm not an expert, but I hope some of these ideas could help out.

Just get a home security system, and get a giant speaker, or a siren, mount it to the top of the house, and when someone breaks in, a couple blocks surrounding your house will know. Also let the neighbors know, so they know not to freak out and know when someone is breaking in.
