And was it sitting on the battery prior to the fire?

Semi off topic, does Cali not require comp. ins. on vehicles with liens?

Regarding the homeowners insurance.... I had my jeep stolen out of my driveway about 6 years ago, they said they would cover it if it was stolen out of the garage, but since it was outside in the driveway no luck there.... Since you were under covered parking you might have a shot there.

I asked. They told me unless the fire started at the home (not just property ) and then junoed to the truck then yes. But not in this case.

I will have to double check that.

Makes me wonder what would have happened if the fire jumped from the truck to the house. You lose everything because you don't have comp. I smell fish.

Exactly which fuses are burned out? ( if you can retrieve them...)

If the fire jumped from the truck to the house then Homeowners would take care of the house and comp under the auto policy for the truck if applicable.

Interestingly enough, If the fire jumped from a non-owned auto to your house, your homeownsers insurance will subrogate the car owners auto policy for damages.

My advice is to file the actual claim on the auto policy. The auto-insurer will then have to complete an investigation into if you had coverage for this loss. If you have a lien, it's likely you have comp. In TX it's the law, not sure in CA.

Also, file the claim with the Homeowners. They will have to complete a due-process investigation if a claim is actually filed to determine how this loss applies or does not apply to your homeowners policy.

Good luck OP! Hope something works out for you.

This is what I was wondering, why is it on top of the battery? Doing work and someone set it there, possibly forgot and it moved or shifted while driving and finally arc'd out in the driveway?

Just gotta do it right (like any aftermarket electrical work) and should be no problem. Betcha the vast majority of aftermarket stereos never cause a fire.
Just wouldn't trust any sketchy shop. Always best to learn yourself if you have the inclination. Nobody will take care of your truck like you will.

I put one of these on my RV batteries, will be doing the same on my truck as I have been wiring in my own accessories like extra outlets, ham radio, etc.

****Please be sure it’s this 30amp, NOT the 60 I accidentally posted earlier! Sorry!

Same, except I rewired it correctly. Couldn't pass up a $2,000 sound system that came with the truck

    Dan,

Thanks, great info and advice. One question about when you say to file a claim. OP calls his agent(s) and they tell him he's not covered or whatever. Does he just ask the agent to file the claim or is there some other process?

I believe you can go online and file a claim at the insurers website.

Agents really don't have anything to do with the claims process. It is best to contact the insurance company directly by filing a claim on thier website or calling. For example, don't call ABC Insurance Agency, call the insurer directly such as State Farm, Progressive, All state etc.

Earlier I said that in TX it is law that you have to have full coverage if you have a Lien. To clarify, I can't remember if that is actually a law. However when you agree to sign all the paperwork for your Lien you are signing a contract. That contract will explicitly state that you have to have full (Comp and Coll) on the vehicle until it is paid off.

My hope is that the OP does have comp and doesn't understand his policy. If not, then he could possible have more trouble with the bank. He may face fines according to his contract with them for not carrying the required insurance.
