I have a 4cyl 5sp. At about 100k miles I had the clutch replaced. The shop either f'd up or installed a faulty clutch kit because within about 100 miles it developed a throw out bearing squeal. The shop supposedly replaced the whole clutch kit. Everything seemed fine for a few thousand miles. However now, whenever I allow for any clutch slippage, (starting on an incline, pulling boats out of the water, or even just a quick acceleration from a stoplight) I get burning clutch smell. There's no other symptoms of clutch failure. However a minor throw out bearing squeal has returned. Any ideas what's going on? Did the shop get grease on the pressure plate and now it's glazed. Is there a bad transmission or engine seal dripping onto the clutch? Any guesses are appreciated.

Some clutch kits are substandard and you may need a better kit or oem to work with your towing demands.

I’d ask them to warranty it but with a better kit.

a possibility is incorrect pedal free play but less likely

Thanks. For the reply. I did wonder if was just a crazy soft clutch. Unfortunately I'm out of any warranty period because I drive the truck so little. Though, when I do, it is generally pretty heavy use like towing (small boats) or loaded with coolers of ice and fish, meat or both. If it just remains whiff of clutch and bystanders thinking I don't know how to drive stick, I don't care. I just don't want to be adventuring in remote AK and have it become a problem there...

A nagging clutch issue is on the list of problems that can absolutely leave you stranded. I'd fix it asap. If the release bearing is hanging up and not sliding it can smoke even a good quality clutch kit quickly
