I have. 2017 Tacoma 3.5L with 114000 km/ 70000 miles I’m getting blueush smoke on cold starts and after deceleration or coasting down hills.

im the second owner, bought it with 50,000 km / 30,000 miles and did the oil changes no more than 6000 km 4000 miles apart.

I’m betting the valve seals are shot, obviously disappointing.

Can anyone tell me what’s the approximate cost of replacing them?

I know there is a significant amount of labor needed just to get to the parts.

How much oil are you having to add?

Dependent upon the shop you take it to, I would say 1750-2500

Just spit-ballin’ for a simple solution.....maybe check and see if a previous owner installed a catch can that might be full?

After some exploration by the mechanic, turns out its the left bank # 3 valve seal. Significant oil in intake and a loose spark plug, which seems very weird to me. They also heard an odd noise on cold start up.... just making sure its not in the bottom end before the valve job is done. Im hoping its not a crank bearing otherwise its a new engine for me. Seems very out of character for a 2017 Toyota with only 114k km / 70k mi. Id had chevys with 300k km with near zero issues.

So they’re gonna need to do a valve job when it really only needs a valve seal?

Can you explain the “significant oil on intake”
What does this mean? If there is a significant amount of oil in the intake manifold, that’s blow by. A valve job won’t help, that’s rings.

start your engine and remove the oil filler cap. Are you seeing puffs of smoke? Will the cap sit in place or is it wobbling about?

Yeah agree on this. You don’t need a valve job. I’d get clarification on this before authorizing anything.

The shop is going to do more investigation into what’s going on. The valve seal is gone for sure. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is multiple issues.

I bought the Toyota because of their bullet proof reputation. This will be THE most expensive repairs I’ve ever had to get done.

I think you are getting not so good advice. First step is measure consumption.

I agree…….the diagnosis is WAY too vague and the OP’s description just doesn’t make sense.
