I never had an issue of burning oil until I owned a Honda.

Or PCV valve sucking oil into the cylinders. #6 spark plug is always oily due to that stupid crankcase vent over it. .

As BlueT mentioned, replace, not just inspect the PCV valve.

You have to be careful buying oil. I have seen the Mobil 1 in 5 quart and 4 quart size jugs for just about the same price. Did you use quart size bottles or is there a chance you think you bought the 5 quart jug and really only bought the 4 quart; and then added an additional half thinking you had just filled with 5.5 but really only filled with 4.5?

I usually buy the 5+ jugs which are 5.28 qts. I don't have the old jug so I suppose it's a possibility. Like I said, I'm really hoping it's just a series of brain farts so that's not a bad suggestion.

To check if its the guides, downshift and let the engine slow you down going down the hill then when almost at the bottom, hit the gas, if there is a problem with the guides you will see a puff of blue smoke. Cheap way to see if its the guides.

Do you down shift to force engine braking? Then accelerate once you're at the bottom?

I switched a truck over to Mobile 1 at 35K or so. It went from no oil loss in 3K miles to using a half a quart every 2K. That really didn't bother me, so I let it go. After the rear main seal started leaking, I went back to dino. Never burned another drop after that. The rear main stopped leaking too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Dino the OEM fluid sort deal? I sounds familiar. But maybe the cohesion/adhesion properties of some oils have something to do with the metal our engines our made of.

If you want to monitor oil level and consumption, use the dipstick on level ground. Measuring drained oil is not a very accurate measure of oil consumption. Even a drained filter holds a fair bit of oil, even one our size. Did you use one of the larger filter options this tine perhaps?

when the valve guides are worn they allow oil to drain down the stems into the intake tract. When you start the truck up that oil goes straight into the cylinder and burns.

Yup, might as well stick with that Prestone. Your engine is already toast.:D

    Worth a shot!

Hmmm... If I lose the same amount this oil change, I might switch back to dino just for shits and grins and see what happens.

I agree 100%. That's why I'm not overly concerned yet. I've been checking the oil using the dipstick every morning and will continue to do so for the next few thousand miles. Measuring the oil you get out of an engine isn't the best way to tell if you've lost oil but it's a good way to catch your attention so you can catch something before it becomes a big problem. I use the same Toyota OEM filters everytime. I buy 2 - 3 at a time so the same size filter.

So I'm assuming that's what is going on with Whipper's truck, giving him that nice blue smoke at start up. I watched this morning, I'm not showing any smoke at startup, just a very fine, white vapor after it's been running for a few seconds. No blue hues!

well it could also be the PCV valve which is actually more likely than the valve guides on a <100k mile truck.
