"Burnish" the rear differential

Sounds like the process of bedding the brakes. Burnishing. Learned a new term. It still doesn't apply to what was gonna happen to the OP. He was gonna get taken from behind dry!

 

I looked up 'Burnish' this is the wikipedia's definition:

Burnishing is the plastic deformation of a surface due to sliding contact with another object. It smooths the surface and makes it shinier. Burnishing may occur on any sliding surface if the contact stress locally exceeds the yield strength of the material. The phenomenon can occur both unintentionally as a failure mode, and intentionally as part of a manufacturing process. It is a squeezing operation under cold working.

I'd go the the Toyota site and put in a contact/question. They will open a case number and get back to you. I'd LOVE to see what they reply with ...

 

Burnish the rear diff is what happens when you drive it with it half full of oil.

 

See, since you have been around a while, they KNOW you have heard of all the tricks. They have just created a new trick to sow doubt and create confusion and, just possibly, separate you from your cash. Didn't work did it. My guess is they learned this method from someone in the sales dept!
