Thanks for everything. I already have bad PTSD and this situation surely didnt help. My friend is recovering and in better spirits than me, especially when he was shown what his new bionic hand can do. It's still a ways away but it's in the process. He had complications with infections and errant spurs floating around but everything is healing and in stable/good condition. The one thing he said to me that flipped my doomsday switch off was "I'm looking forward to our next trip." His family thanked me but I'm still struggling with blaming myself for everything. Either way things are ok. Just an update

Religious people can be so gross some times. Talk to a therapist to heal from this man, you dont have to believe in god to be a good person or live a good life

Sounds like he never blamed you in the first place. He was using an instrument of mass carnage improperly and injured himself in an accident. None of this will change that you blame yourself. You need to forgive yourself, that is the only thing that will help you. I've been there. You are taking the right steps and talking to the right people. Major props for that, some us believe we are too mentally strong to seek that help and wind up on the darkest of dark roads. You saved a mans life, weather or not you carried him to the spot that the accident happened does not change this fact. Give yourself that credit as 9 out of 10 people would not have known how to react and even worst may have gone into shock themselves. I completely understand you blaming yourself, and I am sure many others do as well. Please continue to talk to people about this and I hope that you and your friend recover as much as physically and mentally as possible.

It happened as it happened. It wasn't your wanting to go down the trail that caused it. It just happened. A moment in a cosmic chain of events that nobody could foresee. If the tree never grew it never would have fallen. If the chainsaw was out of gas he never would have cut himself. If you went down the trail ten minutes earlier the tree would have still been standing. There are literally an infinite number of possible scenarios that you can create in your mind, but there's only one reality. And the reality now is that something else is happening - your friend is alive. That didn't have to happen either, but it did thanks to your efforts.

PTSD is a real bitch. Sounds like you know that already. You may be interested in the book "The Body Keeps The Score" by Bessel van der Kolk. Take care of yourself.

I indirectly knew a guy who got one of those high school summer intern jobs working at the city parks department. He would have been like 16 to 18 years old at the time. They had him go around in a city truck and trim branches in parks with a chain saw. What could possibly go wrong?

He was standing on the city truck's tailgate cutting a tree branch with a chainsaw. He had the chainsaw going full blast just as he fell off the tailgate. He somehow landed backwards with his head on top of the the chainsaw. The chainsaw chewed/cut/ground the upper back of his neck and lower part of his skull. Bad deal. Real bad.

The thing is; probably 90++ percent of the population would have not been able to have provided the help you provided to your friend.
