So while I was taking my intake apart I found one of my injector wires with a burn mark on it. Doesn't look like a horrible burn but just thought I'd see what you guys think. Could this cause bad performance/bad gas mileage? I guess the big question is how the hell do I go about testing the wire?

I would carefully cut the burned spot off then inspect the wires, if they are not burned your good to go tape up the sheath around the wires.Or carefully slit the sheath and inspect the injector wires.Just a thought.

yea thats what i was thinking.. the only thing that worries me is that sheath/insulator is pretty thick and almost seems like its heat resistant. i just don't want to tape the insulator and have the electrical tape melt off or something lol..

    thanks for the response.

OP, unless your engine is idling rough, which would indicate a compromised injector, I wouldn't mess with it. That sheath is a protective barrier for the wires and if its not burned through, then the insulation on the wires should be fine.

The sheath will sacrifice itself first, that's why its there. What I would do though, is go around and make sure that the rest of them are not resting on anything that may cause them to get hot and melt.

Well right now I have the entire intake off including the injector rail. But yea that's exactly why I didn't want to cut it. Thanks for the feed back. The only thing I'm worried about is when I felt the wires through the insulator they almost seemed melted together and I could feel the wires break free from each other. The whole reason I'm doing all of this is because of rough idle.

If you have a misfire I would for sure cut that sheath and look at the wires,I know it protects them but ya gotta know. There has to be something to re-wrap the wiring were you removed the sheath. If you have to repair the wires slide some shrink tube on before soldering or however you repair the wires that should protect from heat.

Id say its good, take a new razor blade and cut a inch or so slit in it (carefully) and inspect the wire

scalpel it apart and see. You could have welded 2 wires together.

Hmm I had a misfire before and it looks like someone replaced that injector thinking it was the injector.. I ended up getting a valve job. Seems like maybe that was the culprit. Before I cut it open I want to find something that I can re wrap it with...

Just read up a little and it sounds like I should get shrink wrap at a hardware store. Gunna go check out orielys..

Unless you plan on pulling the pins/wires out of the electrical connector on the end, you'll have a hard time trying to slide the heat shrink on. If you do get the heat shrink large enough to make it over the connector (unless you're gonna heat shrink the tiny 18 gauge wires; sliding on heat shrink prior to soldering. You could just use butt connectors for the repair), I don't think it'll shrink enough (to replace the burned, gray wire loom). I guess you could try to shrink as much as possible. I'd razor a slit, length wise, on the gray insulation and inspect the wiring underneath. When done, you can electrical tape over the slit. It (electrical tape) might get gummy over the years, just change it out if it bothers you.

You could just pull the connector off of the injector while it's running, and see if you feel the difference; change in idle. If there's no change, then that's your guy. If it gets worse, then look elsewhere.

Ok I cut it open they looked fine. Guess I'll just tape it for now.
