Could have ended up being a 10k vet bill.

Sometimes one does the trick! Even easier on smaller dogs.

That's why I have only ever owned big dogs.
They're way better at passing balloons.

I bet you it's the valve cover gaskets leaking oil on the exhaust manifold. It smells. Try gently tightening the valve cover bolts if they're loose. Overtightening will crack your valve covers. If that doesn't work you'll need new valve cover gaskets.

I read this thread in under 10 seconds. Am I correct that there is a burning smell the OP found from a dog he ran over that had a ballon in his ass which melted on the manifold while driving thru town looking for hookers?

I can only read so much before I lose focus and need stuff summarized.

I had a small exhaust leak at the upper exhaust flange- not enough to trip a CEL, but just enough that I could smell it, and sometimes see smoke from a cold start. It was noticeable in the cab and out of the cab on short drives. It was more of an exhaust smell rather than rubber, but smells are subjective. I was able to replace the flange gasket (without snapping any studs) and that solved my problem. Anyway, something worth checking and crossing off the list).

Would also suggest checking the valve cover leak onto the exhaust / heads case. I thought my above problem was due to leaking valve cover gaskets. So I sprayed some foaming engine degreaser in there (when the engine was cold) and hit it with a brush attached to the drill as best I could, rinsed it, and tried to clean up the oil. That didn't fix my exhaust gasket issue, but it did point me in the right direction.
