Except when rusty frames aren't a Toyota problem. Toyota is just one of the few companies to ever do anything about.

Basically by taking care the customer, they shot themselves in the foot.

Please explain your stance further. Toyota is out to protect their $$$$$ they didn’t do it because they like their customers.

Other than the 6.0/6.4L powerstroke I don’t know of any other service campaign or warranty or class action suit that has cost a car manufacturer more. Not even VW diesel gate.

Thats a pretty dramatic take on a mechanic/service writer relationship.

I think its just the mechanic covering his ass.. he's been there a while and seen how these situations go down.

Its true those trouble trees are long and boring, but following them to the letter is how the mechanic and the service writer stay out of trouble.

And up in the front office.. Dealership managers/owners dont like getting sued. A high dollar failure has to be documented perfectly.. as in, written up exactly how the bean counters (lawyers) want it written. That means no skipping steps. Service writer "initials" where he is instructed to, same for the tech.

An "official" diagnosis like the one OP posted reads like lawyer-speak for a reason..

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
I don't know if its the highest but the 2.4l Hyundai/Kia Theta2 is a $760 million settlement that the company is already taking it on the chin for. Good news is if it doesn't just grenade, it'll also catch the car on fire. I'll get a lifetime engine replacement under the settlement though (again, if the car doesn't burn down).

So I know this is frustrating for the OP but it happens and at least it doesn't sound like it's a common problem with the 3.5l.

I don't blame you. Dealership I go to sees quite a few of these repairs regularly. It's a pretty common repair.

Seems to be a lot of 18's. I wonder if the calibration / acis tuning has anything to do with it

Pretty sure that 11101-09551 is a new cyl head sub-assembly. Looks like they swapped the good valves over to the new head and replaced the damaged valves

On mine they swapped the good valves over to the new head. The mechanic took me in and showed me the bad valves and exactly what he did to fix it. He also said he has done five trucks with same problem. Said he wished toyota would allow him to replace the other side so he does not have to tear my truck apart a second time when the other side has the issue.

He was told by toyota that faulty valve guides are possibly to blame. He said they send the faulty heads back to toyota for examination.

Anyone ask if the new replacement head came with new spark plugs? I think I asked about everything replaced except spark-plugs. With them dropping the entire drive train out just about all fluids got replaced with the exception of brake fluid and rear diff. I didnt have any mods on mine except a ton of Meso stuff :-....

I forgot to ask, but traded it in the next day so I cannot check now.

Reviving an old thread. I have this issue on Cylinder #2 after 143,000 miles on a '16. Compression test showed almost 100psi low in cylinder 2.

Upon disassembly it was determined that the cylinder head (and 4 valves) would need to be replaced, totaling ~$6K as mentioned before in this thread from others.

The concern here is that the other bank could end up with the same issue. Unfortunately this is well out of warranty so I'm on the hook for the full bill.

Dealership was able to locate a used engine with 33K on it from a '17 for $9K installed. Given that I plan to keep the truck that seems like the best option.

Fork, for 9 large, I'd source and install my own used engine.
