My CV boot looks like it was rubbing together and finally got a tear in it and now is shooting grease everywhere. Will this harm anything leaving it like this other than having to replace the axle eventually?

Also, whats a good option on replacing it with maybe a boot that won't touch the grooves and wear down and bust again? Is there one thats a cylinder/circle shape? Any info and links etc on a better axle with a better boot would be greatly appreciated. Anyway to just replace the boot easily?

Lifted? That is a common issue with lifted trucks. If left you will need to replace the axle as the longer it goes the more debris gets in and wears the CV bearings. I'm pretty sure they do make heavier boots.

3" lift and a site to a good heavier boot would be awesome

    Here you go:
    http://store.sdhqoffroad.com/tacomacvbootkits.aspx

Not a hard job to accomplish at all, just messy. I wouldn't even bother opening up the outer boot to swap unless its showing wear as well. Toyota also makes a kit that includes the grease etc and you can slide the boot out so the fins don't rub before you re-clamp.

Do these require a special tool to fasten the clamp? These two links don't include new grease? What grease is recommended?

If you want to just swap, go with CVJ(http://www.cvjreman.com/), they are fantastic to work with and you get an OEM product vs a Chinese copy for around $100 + shipping and core. I have a 3" lift and my boot was rubbing slightly but it lasted quite a while before it actually ripped. The standard boots that CVJ uses on their remans weren't even close to rubbing once I got it reinstalled.

Pretty sure they aren't exact OEM reman. The splines are still different in the CVJs. From what I've read they are the best reman option though.

OEM is still the way to go though, rebuild yours and keep it. Don't turn it in as a core, they are $330 from the dealer.

You need a crimp tool, but a lot of guys replace these bands with stainless hose clamps. I think South east overland sells them

I am almost positive they take the cores and rebuild them, the axle I received was identical to the one I took out, and everything on their website says they start with OEM axles and rebuild them. As far as not returning the core, that would mean the axle I bought would have been $200 instead of $100 and then I would have to get the parts to rebuild that one myself. All in it would be close to $300 plus my time to learn how to do the rebuild, with shipping, getting two axles from CVJ would be about the same cost and I know they are done right.

Awesome thank you. Did you just order one from the image Axle or Off-Road on their website?

For all of you people with a 3 inch lift saying that your CV boots are rubbing do any of you have a diff drop? Would that prevent something like this?

You just order from the standard CV Axles tab, I just emailed Steve there and told him what I was looking at and he gave me all of the options and pricing.

I would be more than happy to take a pic for you, but unfortunately the blue truck in this pic is mine. These are all waiting for new frames at the dealer that are around 5-6 months out.

They say that adding a diff drop on the second gens barely makes a difference in the CV angles, it rotates the differential instead of actually dropping it down like it should. From what I have read, you can slide the boot further out on the axle to pull the fins further apart and prevent them from rubbing. I would go this route if you are just doing it to prevent future issues.

Maybe they re-machine and assemble with different axles. Which is possible because disassembling a stock outer joint completely is damn near impossible without cutting the axle shaft and pressing the remnants out.

I know for sure a long travel guy had issues because his CVJ CV had different non compatible splines.

Buy auto zone special, use until you can rebuild OEM and return or keep as spare
