Been casually looking for a while, no big hurry. Cash buyer, budget under 20k. Found a '12 that checks all the boxes (V6, 4WD, hard cover) for 18k. It's about to trip 130,000.

Should I be hesitant at that high mileage?

Meh. Its not like over priced or anything. Just Meh... not a steal and your not getting raped.

High mileage= more maintenance. Probably still a good truck through, but nothing exciting. Its not something that I would jump on and be completely stoked.

Check the main fluids and look for traces of lack of maintenance. Any fill holes that appear excessively dark or dirty mean lack of maintenance. You can also crawl under the frame and inspect for signs of terminal frame rot. If it has that, deal breaker.

I drive quite a lot and have 75k on my '12. 130 is impressive. I'd guess it's mostly highway miles, so not terrible. If you can inspect (or have a mechanic do so) and it checks out... I'd try for a better price, but might be worth buying. Get service records and all other info, of course.

    12TRDTacoma's wisdom above definitely applies.

130 miles is a lot of miles. I see first gen's with that many miles on craigslist all the time and they are going for way less than 18k. I am not too concern on the year of the vehicle.. To me its the miles that count. I cannot justify spending that much money on a vehicle with more than 100,000 miles.

I would not buy a truck with 130k but that's not to say you should not. I would wait and save a little money, but like the guys say check the maintenance record. A truck with 130k maintained is better than a truck with 80k that's not serviced regularly......

I would be more ok with buying a truck significantly over mileage than significantly below mileage. Vehicles that don't get driven a lot usually wear out prematurely from constant short trips or being left without use. Vehicles that are driven a lot usually get more attention. Plus it really is less wear even though it's more miles.

I bought my 2012 exactly a year ago with 121k miles paid 27k for it. (reasonable for my area.)

    Its now got 160k

Ive only replaced the suspension (for a lift kit) and done regular maintenance.

I do have a seized LCA adjuster, but its in spec, so not a high priority replacement.

The PO went to dealership for all services.

As long as service has been done, that isn't too many miles.

Ive personally seen a 2008 with 270k and its still going strong as ever.

Maintenance is more important than miles.

    P.S.

I am a ASE certified mechanic. Take that for whatever you think it is worth.

I bought a 06 TRD off-road with 70K miles on it about a year ago for 17k. It was listed at 20 though but I think the manual Transmission scared a lot of people off. I would pass on that and look for something with less miles

At 12k a year (a normal allowance) that's 10.8 years of mileage on a 5 year old vehicle.

While the 130k is not a great issue if a pre purchase professional inspection checks out, you certainly should be paying a substantial discount for the year model.

Have a friendly insurance agent? Ask them what their book value of the truck is in it's current state. I know the 'market' claims a great Toyota tax, but insurance companies, not so much.

Also, asking a CU or friendly banker isn't a bad reference either.

You have to decide what it's worth to you, and be willing to walk away if the seller doesn't meet that. Be polite, leave them your number and tell them to call if they change their mind. I've bought a few decent pieces with that technique.
