It's actually crossed my mind, but I can't be without a vehicle for that long. I can't imagine a first year Toyota would be fraught with catastrophic bugs/issues. I mean, hasn't the platform itself been around for a while? Not sure about the new turbo engine, but I love my little 2.7L, even more so since it's still manufactured in Japan.

2023 you get a final model year with all issues sorted out but you are getting what would be an older model.

2024 you will get new year of new model which seems that will be far more complicated and technological than 2023. You will get nicer newer taco but you might have issues. You will pay more.

    conservative choice: 2023
    F@ck it choice: 2024

You can't consider a Truck that hasn't been fully released yet. Keep what you have for a few more years or get a 2023 SR5 4X4 before they are gone. My 0.2 cents.

Resale on 2023s will not drop after 2024 is released. Some will be put off by initial issues with 2024 even if they had hope and will take the close-out 2023s in a heartbeat.

If the 2024 is a homerun, values could drop a bit.

So, need a bit more advice/input. Seems like the current '23 SR has quite a bit more in the way of convenience features than my '17 SR when I bought it. I actually had to add cruise and intermittent wipers. The '23 SR seems to have all of the features that the SR5 had when I bought my SR. I could literally get into another SR 2.7L (I don't mind the engine either) for very little to any cash out of pocket. I could get into a SR 4WD for about $5K out of pocket, which has the towing package, or spend $6K out of pocket for the SR5 2WD.

I like my SR enough that I hadn't ever planned to sell it until this Carvana offer was presented. Would I be shooting myself in the foot to just get another SR since it has most of the the modern features? I'll never be off-road, so don't know if I really need to spend the extra money on 4WD, and I like the way the SR is "blacked out" so-to-speak, with no badges. Guess I'm trying to justify $6K out of pocket for the SR5 trim, which doesn't seem to have much more than the SR (tow package, power drivers seat, power rear window). The kind of driving I do, 4cyl vs 6cyl really isn't an issue.

SR 4 banger 2WD only. SR or SR5 V6 4WD. Better resale IMHO. If possible take a SR5 2WD and or 4WD out for a spin. See if it’s worth it to you. I know it can be difficult to find trucks to test drive due to shortages and crazy demand.

I had the same issue and decided to get the 23 since I wanted a manual (it seems like they are going to get rid of it with the hybrid) and did not want a first year truck. I also don't like the look of the trundra that much and it seems like they are going to copy a lot of the design.

I would jump on the Carvana offer now. There is no telling when the used car market bottoms out and with a new generation on the horizon 3rd gens will lose value to some degree, that is inevitable.

Buy Both! Start with a '23 and trade it in for a '24, when they become available which may not be for a while (see Ford Maverick).

Agree with Nuked: I would jump on the Carvana offer now - if you can get the '23 in the configuration you want at MSRP or better.

If you happen to think the 3.5 with its timing cover and coolant crossover leaks is bad, wait until the turbo shows up saying "hold my beer"!

I would sell to Carava at that price and not think twice about it. If you wanted to be conservative you could buy an New 23' SR5 for like 3-5K more, which is still going to be a better truck than you have now.

While I don't disagree with your assessment, used vehicle prices are on the rise again. How far for how long? Who knows! Just like with the stock market, it is difficult to time the market!

I have a new 2023 SR5 4x4 access cab……. I chose 3rd gen partly because there are already 1 million aftermarket parts/mods that have been tested and reviewed here on tacomaworld for 3rd gens….. and I plan to use several products Ive seen here.
I thought about the 2024 also but decided that I prefer the established model versus the revamped model.
just my opinion and either way you go……. you’re gonna have a nice truck.

Comparing a ‘23 to a ‘24 right now is comparing an absolute proven commodity with a leaked & photoshopped concept that people are projecting their own unrealistic expectations onto. Sure, Gen4 should be a very good truck, but revolutionary compared to prior gens? Come on now..

Based on that, you should go with what you already know is an outstanding choice. A 2015 Tacoma is a damn good truck today, and a 2023 will be a damn good truck in 2031. Plus they both have bulletproof NA V6’s.

And if, after a year or two of working out the inevitable bugs, the Gen4 is just so incredible that it will alter your life, then you’ll still get top value on your ‘23 trade in. Win-win.
