My uncle had a very successful engine rebuilding business for a very long time. When it came time for him to retire, the business was almost non-existent. Because engines didn't need to be rebuilt anymore? Nope. Because by the time an engine got a couple hundred thousand miles on a consumer vehicle, everything else needs replacing. If anything can get high mileage with minimal maintenance, Toyota has proven they definitely can. But people don't put that many miles on vehicles because it just doesn't make financial sense.

Nope.....I heard it from the president of Toyota, who is quoted as saying “even if the damn Tacoma is hovering 10 feet off the ground, and powered by an ion Lazer drive, make sure you put drum brakes on that sucker”.

It’s not so bad. I also heard, starting in 2019, the brake drums are going to be colour-matched on the Sport, and chrome-plated on the Off Road.

If you want to know what engines the Tacoma (or Tundra) will be getting in the future, look towards Lexus.

V6 3.5 turbo atkinson in the LS
    I4 turbo in the IS
V6 Hybrid in the LC (actually pretty cool powertrain with 350 HP)

These are the engines/power trains that are coming to the Toyota trucks. Not diesels.

This is true for the general public, but not so much true for the super anal maintenance freaks that visit this forum...

Most of the advantages of a diesel no longer exist. Everyone I know currently driving a 3/4 ton diesel tells me they will go to gas with their next truck. Our local school bus fleet is experimenting with some gas engines in school buses and is considering phasing out diesel buses.

With the EPA restrictions, DEF, cost of fuel, high initial costs, weight of the engines, poor fuel mileage, complexity of the engines and turbo's, and the extreme costs of maintaining the engines it simply isn't worth it anymore. Some fleets are driving gas engines 400,000 miles, having them rebuilt, drive another 400,000 and rebuild it again for less cost than a diesel.

Twenty years ago when diesel cost 1/4 what gas cost and got significantly better fuel mileage with simple, inexpensive, easy to maintain engines they made sense.

Ha. I check my oil every now and then, have the dealer change it every 10K and move on with life. I have total confidence in the truck and am pretty sure it is tougher than most people think. People here do stuff because they like it, not because it is difficult (its not) or frequent. If you miss it by a thousand miles or so it's no big deal.

We used to drive 45,000 miles a year or more traveling the West in outside sales jobs. Diesels (pickups, Volvos, Mercedes, even VW) were all pretty common in order to get 3-5 years out of them. Although its starting to change in the last year or two, try renting a gasoline vehicle in Europe...hard to find when all the vans, cuv's, sedans are oil burners.

Maybe buy the Colorado diesel, full size, or wait for other diesel options if mpg at interstate speeds is that important to you. The Tacoma mpg sucks at 70+ mph.

If the OP is from New Zealand or Australia, what makes you think he will want a Colorado?

Chevy's subsidiary down under (holden) has not be doing to well, and I don't think the Colorado is as popular their as the Ranger or Hilux.

What? OP'S original post referenced the Colorado and talked about driving between Sacramento and Portland. Do they have cities in Australia and NZ by those names?
