As much as I despise GM I may go take a ride in a Colorado just to see what the competition offers--that ballsy little 2.8 L diesel with 369 lb·ft @ 2000 rpm sounds interesting...

Reliability- can't beat 2nd gen. I bought my 05 sport new and drove it 12 years 116k miles. Oil changes, new front breaks at 75k, 100k service @ 10 years, changed the serpentine belt. Nothing else had to be changed or replaced, unless it was my fault. I got new rear leaf springs last year through the recall.

I just wanted a newer truck that would be paid off before I retire.

My roommate sells chevys but owns toyotas... I hear at least 1 story a week about someone trading in a 3rd gen bc they are tired of the problems or they've driven a 3rd gen and have heard about the problems and want nothing to do with them.... so excuse me for using my eyes and ears to draw a conclusion

You'll excuse me for thinking anecdotal evidence is really no evidence at all.

I buy a new vehicle every year and will be selling my one year old truck imminently. The factory workers must have eaten their Wheaties the day they built my 16. I have had zero problems with it, I just like to change it up. Definitely agree about buying new v used though. It's stupid how much I can trade my truck for.

It absolutely SHOULD be dismissed, especially in this forum.

You and I have both owned 2nd gens. You and I have both driven 3rd gens and were, dare I admit it, unimpressed. However, I found something (MT) I could live with, while you are happy with what you have. In both cases, we clearly outlined our concerns and desires.

Then, suddenly, a guy makes 2 one-line posts about the evils of a 3rd gen with no explanation until several hours later with "well, my roommate says..." Compared to two objectives first hand reviews, do you honestly believe this kind of advice is helpful? I believe posts with words such as "I like" or "I didn't like" are always far more productive than with "those suck" anyway. Don't you agree?

Besides, it's a moot point. The OP is coming from an old Nissan I believe. His primary concern is back seat room and height for his dog. In that regard, side by side, there's zero difference between the two vehicles. The OP will simply need to drive both and see what he prefers.

Is that a serious question or are you joking as it is sometimes hard to figure out on a forum? If it is a serious question the 03 is still a 1st Gen Tacoma, 05-15 is 2nd Gen.

Apologies in advance for the sarcasm , but I'm not really an egg, it's a quote from a famous sci-fi writer. ;)

So are the gens defined by a major change in body styling or something else? Are they unique to this forum or a Toyota thing?

Toyota does not make big changes on the Tacoma, usually just some cosmetic or equipment changes, when the next Generation comes out is usually when they mess with the Powertrain.
