This thread may have been created before, but I'm looking for a decent guide on what to look for in buying an old Toyota Pickup.

Seems like the general consensus is to try and find a 4 cylinder in the 22re format since it will be easier (and possibly cheaper) to work on.

I'm looking for more than that. What year models should I focus on? What are some definite NOs to steer clear of? Obviously, serious rust issues are a big concern.

Just hoping to hear everyone chime in on what the perfect Toyota Pickup is and if they couldn't have that, what their second, third or fourth choice would be?

What I am looking for is a general use farm truck to get around the property in while also getting me to work 10 miles away (20 miles/day 5 days/week). I have a third gen, but want to keep it as low mileage as possible.

I just want to keep it simple and stick to the Toyota brand, but try to stay under $3000.

    Thanks!

22re: reliable, tough, underpowered little engine. Main issue is timing chain and guides, keep them maintained regularly. If no records of it being changed, plan on getting it done, knock off $800-1000 off price if taking it somewhere to fix. Little cheaper if doing it yourself. Just rusty undersides to look out for, and normal wear stuff.

V6; can be reliable if kept up on. Known head gasket issues, look for coolant in oil. Something in the stock exhaust system is a problem for the head gasket, from what I’ve been told. Little more of a gas hog, little more power. Of course, underpowered too. Just the usual wear and tear, as well as rust to look out for.

    GL with your search!

So, if you could have your ideal config, what would it be? Seems like most of what I'm finding is 22r and i want to stay away from carburetors. That or V6s, which I'm also trying to stay clear of.

Obviously, there are some cosmetic issues here, but this is close to the best deal I've found so far. Guy says he will do $2000. Had the timing chain done recently by a reputable shop. I don't like that it is a V6, but it won't stop me completely. New front bumper is about $60. I don't care about the quality of the paint.

    Any thoughts?:bananadance:

Already have the best toyota pickup ever made. 93 access can 3.0 5mt. She is rusty n trusty 395k so far still running.20170428_090339.jpg
Second pick would be a solid front axle 22re with 4mt from early 80s

But the red reg cab looks sweet as well hope it's a mt.

Man, that's basically all I need is someone to tell me it's ok to buy one that has high mileage because you really don't have to worry about that.

I'm a big fan of yours, other than the eyebrow piece..... Not sure that looks ok on anything besides an old Ford.

I think it was around that price. It's a long time ago and in riverside ca. Was stationed at Pendleton at the time.

Old toyota are well know fir longevity as long as it was well maintained. Not much power but geared to make up for it. As long as you dont mind not being able to maintain 65 or 60 on the highway.

Tacoma 3.4 mt first gen 7k 300k I'm thinking about jumping on it. They look clean. Would like shots of her underside though.

Toyota under 3k will be gone
