I think issue at hand is people have overreaching expectation of a product which was never advertised to be what they want it to be. Even tundra. Everyone keeps raving about how tundra is this and that... and guess what... I have been camping with travel trailers for years.... 99.9% of the time I do not see a tundra towing a 5th wheel or a heavy trailer, always ultralites. So they are gas hogs, bigger and harder to park and towing capacity I mean it is literally rated for 6800 lbs for 4.6L and 10100 and 10500 for 5.7L. Well no wonder I never see them towing 5th wheels. They are literally not designed for that sort of thing... certainly not with a max payload capacity of 1600 and 2000 lbs.

Even small and cheap 5th wheel is like keystone is 1355 lbs pin weight and weighs 7200 lbs. That is pretty much maxing tundra out which is exactly why for towing anything sizeable (which one would probably need a tundra for), you are better off getting american made whatever.

Be honest with yourself... the real reason why many people have bought a tacoma is because they could not afford a tundra. I have been driving a tacoma since 2009. I have never put myself in a situation when I found 2nd gen and now 3rd gen to be sub par. Ok I can't tow a 5th wheel but I can tow my 21ft travel trailer just fine.

If I ever did get the 5th wheel I would probably end up buying a used but still alive and kicking american made truck capable of towing the 5th wheel specifically as a tow vehicle... you know like a dodge or a gmc or a ford or whatever. Something to be driven specifically for that.

Truth is... tacoma will never be powerful or tow much but it meets the needs just fine... offroading a little... towing a little... family car... hauling stuff and that is mighty fine by me. I was driving up a 30 degree offroad ramp today with huge ruts and washouts and it handled like a champ in 4x4. I tow and haul and use my truck. Maybe it is just me. I do not need the bee's knees... I just need what I actually need... not what I want.

If money was no object I would need a truck capable of towing a 5th wheel, carry 6 people and a 8 ft bed. But I am not made of millions so tacoma will do just fine.

Edit: rephrased statement about buying power.

I have only had my truck for less than a week so far but I would definitely say the power.

I know I can't expect much from the Tacoma but the truck seriously feels underpowered. It's alright though because it is just a work truck and checks all the boxes for me in terms of function.

Reading this thread has been entertaining, it's nice to hear other people's perspective. From mine, I'm fucking stoked on my truck :notsure:

I remember my grandfather driving me around in an 84 Toyota pickup, I think, in 84. And the tranny had this distinctive whine and the cab had a unique smell combined with his cigarette smoke. He had a Córdoba, I'm not sure if that was baller back then, but he never drove it. He was always in his white pickup. And when it came time for me to buy my first vehicle after working a shit job as a night mech/gas pump jockey in an old school gas station in mission beach, that I had to skate to for crying out loud, he told me to buy a Toyota pickup. He mentioned that I had lots of time to buy any other vehicle, but the Toyota was the one that would see me through. I restored a 69 Dodge Dart. I even had a Subaru for a season when I moved to this shithole NY. But I was never without a Toyota pickup, and with my age it was always called "Tacoma". I don't know how some people have had ten... it hasn't been around very long. But I've had three. The first one was cool, but I didn't like the v6. Traded my 95 v6 for an 01, and it's still in my driveway. Still. Zero problems. And I'll be turning it into class 7, it's well on its way. I waited to buy another for a freakin eternity, finally pulled the trigger when I got sick of my stuff suspension on roads that may as well not be paved. So I got the 17, and fuck if I don't love this thing the same as I love my 01. It hasn't disappointed at all, and my grandfather was right. I could have all sorts of vehicles, but the Toyota pickup will see me through. It's not gonna fucking tow. The day I got this some dude at work was like "yeah but my dodge can tow blah blah blah". And? I didn't get a Tacoma to tow shit. It IS my shit. I didn't get it to get Prius mileage, come on. It's still a truck. I think someone above mentioned that people bought this truck with unrealistic expectations. It's like they expect sports car performance, the ability to tow an aircraft carrier, and the gas mileage of an r/c car. Maybe the Tacoma was a poor choice for some I don't know. But I'm happy as fuck, this gen looks rad and sounds great, shit, I've got cup holders again.

I never stop and ask but I see a lot of ford trucks towing. f150, 250, 350, mostly f150 and f250s. I also see people tow with a dodge truck.

Now I am not a rocket scientist so I don't know how and why and what but I can tell you first hand that a lot of it does not make any sense at all. For example, I was told point blank at every single dealership (I personally went to visit 500 travel trailers over 2 years time shopping for an upgrade) that they would not sell trailers unless you owned weight distribution hitch for example... and yet easily 50% of trailers towed at campgrounds do not have weight distribution hitch. I saw a woman living in a trailer full time working as camp host traveling the country tow a 21 ft ultra lite trailer with a toyota sienna van. I constantly people tow with jeeps, suvs.

Heck right now there is a F150 parked under a 5th wheel in USA's biggest rv dealership called lazydays of tampa. Literally a f150 to show that f150 could tow that thing.

All I can do is shrug.

Some of that you said is true but it does not apply to everyone. I could have easily got a tundra instead of a Tacoma. The tundra does not fit my life style considering I drive into town a lot. Also I don't do any towing and only haul home improvement stuff. I remember when I was truck hunting for my Tacoma the dealer ask me to check out the tundra. I got inside and was amazed with the room in side this truck. I got to think though this truck would be a bear driving in town. I stuck with the Tacoma and I love it for my needs. I could have spent an additional 6 thousand dollars and got that tundra and would have been unhappy with it. So please don't say people got the Tacoma because they could not afford the tundra. Everyone is not in the same boat

I agree. I can afford a Tundra and right now I own a 2012 RAM 1500 Sport. I live in a rural area so space and size isn't really a concern for me. I'm trading my RAM for a '17 Tacoma because I don't really use the capability of a full-size. I figure I can down size to a Tacoma and that'll be plenty. Plus I gain better gas mileage, reliability and resale. I also love the fact that I can get a manual transmission. I can certainly afford a full-size, it's just that a mid-size fits me a little better.

These are all the same reasons why I decided to go with a Tacoma (though i am a bit disappointed in the gas mileage)

Just purchased a '17 Sport M/T BBP this evening. Picking up on Monday. Very much looking forward to it! Only things I'll miss about my RAM is the sound/power of the Hemi and high up ride height.

Are you talking about new cars here? I recon most people do not buy top shelf super duper tacoma that costs $60,000. Most tacomas on the road I see in florida are a rear wheel drive only and not even SR5. Those cost about $27000. That may be different for other states but certainly not in my state with 19 million people and tacomas all over the place.

You are absolutely correct about cheap entry level dualies being affordable. I see dodge dualies quite a bit. Tow a lot, cost about the same as a tacoma but if you want to get them in a 4x4 that's additional 20,000 and they are a real peach to park. I can barely park my long bed tacoma with a travel trailer hitch behind it. I am literally longer than a parking space. I can only imagine what it's like having to park a dually... those suckers are parking space and a half wide which is why I always see them parked at the back and across 2 spaces diagonally. And if you ask me a $32,000 4x4 tacoma vs a $52,000 4x4 dualy.... I would rather prefer to buy a tacoma and then a used but functional dually to tow a 5th wheel. Better yet as much as I love my tacoma if I "really needed to tow a 5th wheel", I would likely get myself a dodge ram non dually with adequate tow + payload capacity to tow no more than a 26 ft 5th wheel or something along those lines. That being said I am quite fond of my 21 ft trailer. It allows me to park across 2 parking spaces at a grocery store when stocking up. I don't think I can fit anything longer through my fence line and culvert anyways.

The Silverado I am looking at is a double cab, standard bed, LTZ model, leather, upgraded- 6.2L V8 mated to an 8 spd- very nice. Currently down to $43,000 but they are going to try and bonus tag next month. If that happens-it will cost the same or possibly less than my TRD OR DCLB did new.

    I can buy a 2500 dually for about 45,000 (4x4) but in a W/T model with a 6.0.

Oh my God parking a DCLB is a breeze compared to my old Quad cab 8' Dodge 2500, lol. It's diminutive.

Hmmm, where do I start... I gave up my 2015 Silverado High Country for a Tacoma and I wish I never did. I've owned my Tacoma for 3 months and it has been in the shop twice for the CEL and TRAC OFF light on due to a gas leak in which they finally fixed after two attempts. I also needed the transmission delay software upgrade. I am also getting a humming sound at 40 mph, which the dealership refuses to look into as they claim it's my 265/70/17 KO2's making the sound. It's probably the combination of a terrible dealership and too many problems right away is why I have buyers remorse. I love Tacoma's, but this experience has not been great.

A gas leak seems like a pretty serious issue. I doubt that is not typical of most peoples experience. Do you still have your stock tires? Maybe throw those back on and see if the is still there. If so, the dealer may look at it since you ruled out the tires.

I just traded my RAM 1500 on a '17 TRD Sport DBCB M/T. The RAM was a nice looking truck, plus capable and very comfortable, but not reliable at all. I'm hoping the Tacoma is better in that regard. Plus I got the manual transmission so I don't have to deal with all the bull crap with the shitty auto trans that many people have complained about. I pick it up on Monday. Only time will tell I guess.

The dealership swapped out my tires for stock tires and they claimed they still can't hear the humming noise. However, the humming noise is pretty noticeable with stock tires and with my AT tires, so I don't understand why they still can't hear it. Typical dealership BS. It is what it is, we will see what happens down the road.

Could it be the rear diff howl sound that a lot of people on hear talk about? I think that can be resolved by spending a few bucks at home depot and plugging a couple of holes or something. I'd search around the forums for that.

Yeah, I've been doing a lot of research on the forums and there are a couple of issues that causes the hum/howl. There a some holes under the front LCA that can cause that sound which can be fixed with some plugs or it's the rear diff. I just want the dealership to solve the problem and fix it without me telling them what's the possible cause is. That's their job.
