Hi guys new here to the forum but need some insight. Im in the market to get a new 3rd gen at a local toyota dealership. Planning on getting a 3rd gen off-road with minimal packages. I had originally gone online and created a car with everything i need and wanted. The moment i got to the dealership the sales man was pretty cool and all going through my wants and need telling me everything i wanted could be done. After awhile he goes back to talk with his sales manager and comes back out and tells me that i should get the premium package to get some better deals. After consulting with him i made it clear that i DO NOT need nor want the premium package but he was just set on selling me this premium package. After some talking he finally realize that im not going to buy the premium package so he goes back to his sales manager and comes back with paperworks saying everything is good to go and i can get what i want so i made a deposit to get my new truck made and ship to the dealership (with an approximate wait time of 2-3 months. But im in no hurry). Fast forward alittle over a week now i get an email from my sale guy saying “its harder to get my car i requested in through the system to get made because i DID NOT get the premium package” but on the other hand this guy is trynna sale me another car of a different trim and still trynna get me to upgrade to a premium package.

My question to all that has pre order a new truck from toyota is that is it really true that its harder to get my order through just because i didnt get the premium package or is this guy just trying to sell me something i dont want. Also should i just go and try a new dealership? Thanks

He’s trying to screw you . That’s what customizing is for . To allow a customer to get what they want. I would just cancel and go to another dealer if it was me unless you’re in a bind and need it soon .

Remember from what door you entered the dealership. It’s your ride. Take your time. Find a new dealership that is willing to work with you. It’s all about you, not the salesperson.

has information in general about the subject as thats where ppl are posting what deals they’re getting, ordering process, wait time, etc. the link is just to the page I’m currently on reading through it - it interests me. Anyways I’d start with the more recent posts and work your way back. The further back you go the intel becomes gradually dated and things change.

also you’re the customer. Shop it there are dealerships out there willing to work with you.

that said dude the heated seats are nails get the premium package (I has it) :)

These trucks sell like crazy. To be honest, Toyota doesn’t really care if you buy the truck or not because somebody else will.

I know that’s not a popular answer but it’s true :crapstorm:

Most dealerships don’t want to do custom orders since they don’t make money on these trucks and the build times can be excessive . Majority of the time people walk away from these deals so they take a high risk ordering these .If they give u a good deal on a premium package I would take it .

If he didn’t give you 2-3k off msrp, there is plenty of room in the deal. Tell him you signed for a price and truck that you were happy with. Let him know you you are OK with the wait. Tell him if he wants to deliver sooner with more truck for that price, that would be fantastic! Those heated seats and LED headlights sure are nice...

I went through this, but I was very specific with what I wanted, and the MT’s are really hard to deal with in my area since dealers are unwilling to do swaps unless it’s for another MT. Rather than wait, I found the exact truck sitting on a lot and drove 500 miles each way. Totally worth it. Made a mini vacation out of it and now the kids have fun memories of getting dads new truck.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Not true. The dealers DO make a profit on these deals. In fact, a truly "ordered" vehicle is outside of the dealer's allocation from Toyota which can give them an end-of-month bonus. Almost all "ordered" vehicles are simply a vehicle in the "pipeline" that is close to what the customer wants. When actual production is eminent AND if the sales team has been following it, the vehicle's configuration can be modified to be closer to what the customer wants. Understand - that while you (the customer) may be led to believe you truck has been "ordered" for you, that is seldom the real behind the scenes situation.

You might check out this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/trying-to-order-a-2021-trd-sport.702725/#post-24912814

Unfortunately Toyota tends to preconfigure Tacomas for what has been historically popular in your region. Most of the time this works for them. When you're a customer who is outside of that box, getting what you want and ONLY what you want becomes much more difficult.

Been there. Fought for 2 months to get what I wanted and it took 6 months and 6 days for it to arrive.

To add to this, the likely scenario the OP is facing is the dealer has access right now to a truck that is just what the OP wants, but with the premium package that they can do a dealer swap on.

All i can tell you is to order what you need, not what the sales person wants to retire on. Unfortunately i had to get the premium package in my sr5 to get all the options in the truck i ordered. I can tell you its not so bad one you get use to it. I'm getting up in age, after a year getting the dealers simonize ceramic glass coating has been great so far...any dirt and road sand/salt seems to just slide right off. I'm amazed how clean the truck appears. I can't find a single paint chip anywhere. My last tundra didn't have this exterior treatment, and would collect all the crud from our dirt roads i live off, not to mention all the road salt, plus it use to pickup paint chips from all stones on our dirt road.

Pricing is not the same everywhere and neither is tax, title and shipping. If you really want to know, find someone in same state and area of state because that would be the only true comparison.

Rule numero uno: Never give up your cash with nothing in return or without collateral. In other words never give a down payment on any vehicle. Zero, zip, nada.

There are many reason why ordering your ride can go wrong, too many to go into. That said, when you pick from the dealer inventory, you are at the best position that you can ever be, again for many reasons.

Go on line, check dealer stock for what you want, verify the vehicle in stock and not where they can get it, because that means it’s in another dealer’s lot.

Before you get to the lot, know what the going price is in your area. If it is more than your willing to pay, go outside that area.
People that get the best deals often travel 25+ miles from home. Dealers know this, they don’t want to let you go.
Make the deal if the price is right, and be ready for the business office guy, bring your own Vaseline, as he will also try to rape you without any lube even if you’re buying cash.

I’m sure you already know all this, but someone here may not.
    Good luck

That may or may not be true but I’m pretty sure a particular dealership cares if it makes a sale or not. At any rate, it still doesn’t mean he has to buy what he doesn’t want.

I don’t get why so many people are so confused and sheepish around auto dealerships. They feel like buying a car is somehow different from buying anything else you might want. Nobody thinks it’s ok for the produce guy to insist you also buy a dozen tomatoes in addition to the head of lettuce you want.

It’s not rocket science. Insist on being treated with respect or go to someone else who will.

Where did you get that from? I’ve bought custom orders myself and know tons of people who have done the same and the dealers were more than happy to do it. How do you figure “they don’t make money on these trucks”?

I guess I should’ve sent the dealership a basket of fruit after my custom Tundra purchase. Didn’t realize they were doing it out of the goodness of their hearts... :D

I live in the SE and have yet to find a dealer that will do a special order. Though, admittedly, I have not spent a whole lot of time on it. I tried to order a Tundra TRD Pro and was told, by 2 dealers, they couldn't do it. SE Toyota has a website where you can view available inventory but, I am told, most if not all trucks are earmarked for a particular dealer and dealer trades are not very common in this area.
