Sounds like they have one already allocated that way and would rather sell that to you than order one. Sounds like a good opportunity for price negotiation like previously mentioned.

similar thing happened with the truck we just bought. I wanted the tech package but all they had coming was trucks with advanced tech package. Struck a deal that they would not charge me the price difference between what I wanted and what they had.

    He's trying to up-sell you.
I bought a new 2020 last year and had to go thru 5 different dealers before I found one that was perfectly fine with getting me exactly what I wanted. A couple dealers wanted nothing to do with me as I didn't want what they already had, or was coming real soon.
All in all, I had to wait three months, and go to a dealer 200 miles away, but I got what I wanted. No more and no less.

It was same when ordering my 2020. Went to 3 dealers trying to buy a new tacoma with what i wanted....all said they didn't have one on the lot that i requested, and it'd needed to be ordered. I gave these guys a list with my cell to call me with a total otd. Never heard anything to this date from either....it was like a big pita to estimate an order for this truck. One dealer even suggested i go find a larger regional dealership which i ended up doing in boston. These guys were great, no problem, but i did have to take a higher tech package with some things i didn't need, but all in all doing some research, they were very fair with the pricing.

I pay with sweat and blood still. It's best that you don't know exactly what everyone else paid for theirs so that you won't plant a seed of buyers-remorse...also, there is no real incentive for the anonymous people of the interweb forums to be truthful about what they paid...BUT if you want to feel good about your future purchase, then I will say I paid $64,350.02 out the door for mine.

The real take away should simply be that you are able to drive off the lot with a vehicle you are happy with.

    Lots--
I picked up my Super White in Houston-- flew down to get it. I wanted MT so short bed was only option. The dealer said my truck was a custom order that someone decided to not buy. Pretty sure you can order a custom one for 2021 and if you don't want it you don't lose a deposit. They won't ever have a hard time selling them anywhere

Some of you were right! Went back to the dealership today and found out they were getting the truck i wanted but with the premium package.(so im guessing they never even try to put in my order and instead tried to find a car that match what i wanted instead) but that being said i was able to negotiate the price on that truck instead and got the truck with the premium package for about 2k under MSRP with the addition of the 750 cash back deal they are having bringing the total amount to just over 1k of the original truck i had put an order in. All in all what do you guys think? Did i get hustle or did i make the right decision?

Are you happy with the deal?
If so, stop right there and don't look back.
If you start comparing to what others have done (which may be comparing apples to bananas), it'll raise threads of doubt in your mind.
Be happy with what you've accomplished and don't second-guess whether or not you could have done better.

Did you get hustled or not--It doesn't matter. You are ending up with the truck you wanted albeit + ~$1,000.00 for the upgrade still. Recoup that money somewhere else down the road...cut back on going out for dinner a few times, add an extra hour of overtime at work randomly, don't feed the kids for a month or six...

You will be surprised at how resourceful you can be if you alter your mindset by simply rephrasing a question to "how and where can I tap into to be able to afford so-and-so" as opposed to "I don't know how I can afford this"... It won't take very long at all to recoup that tiny mark-up...you will likely enjoy your truck too much to even remember it.

I'm in Texas. I wanted a DCLB V6 Automatic Off-Road but nothing else. Near impossible to find. My OR had Technology Package and a few Port Options (added after the factory by regional distribution, i.e money makers).

Tech PKG is handy when you have a shell or limited visibility backing out of a spot. A six-foot bed was a requirement. I'm not too fond of sunroofs (long torso, and past dealing with leaks).

Autotrader showed I had two in Texas. Yes, two. This went on for months; some dealers code a 5' bed as a 6', I got bitten looking at one. 5' bed.

So I would explain "6-foot bed, OR" what do you have? Get the VIN:

Another helpful thing is the Toyota VIN specification tool.

    https://www.toyota.com/owners/my-vehicle/vehicle-specification

With a VIN, you can enter and see what factory or Port Options are installed.

My local dealer has this one listed; they pulled the sheet two weeks ago and said, "it will be here next week." Maybe mid-March?

    https://www.toyotaofcedarpark.com/i...offroad-4wd-4d-double-cab-5tfdz5bn9mx059798/#

    https://www.toyota.com/owners/my-vehicle/vehicle-specification

When you pull up; you will see "ordered date" 12/2020. The first date of use 1/2/0000, which says built but not yet released. "5" is San Antonio built, but Toyota has supply issues, so vehicles are built but waiting for one item. Hence messing with supply.

Watch out for stock photo's. One dealer lied with "It's in stock" but hadn't left the factory.

I found my Taco over 700 miles away! I called and talked with them, explained what I wanted for my trade (super clean 2019 Highlander) and why I wanted a truck on their lot. It has been sold! Sales guys said he had one coming Monday. I bought, made arrangements. No hassle, no sweat. Done deal. Phil Long Toyota Trinidad, CO.

Good luck on your hunt! Know what "Port Options" means (My truck was delivered to Colorado, hence Preditor, Mud floor mats, mud flaps, and Tacoma rear decal. Local dealers get $5000 over MSRP (ouch!); Phil Long was decent to deal with. With my trade being over $30K, it saved about $2K in Taxes. The local dealer said, "we can not offer more than $25K on your trade".

    Good luck on your hunt.

This dealer is trying to sell you an in-stock unit that has probably been sitting in their inventory for a while. They should be putting in the effort to find the truck you are looking for. Each dealer has the ability to look at other Toyota dealers inventory. All they have to do is type in the model number and run a search. A good dealer will run a 500 mile search and see if the truck you are looking for is out there and work out a dealer trade. The top selling and better chance of finding are the TRD Off-Road's with the automatic transmission (7544). Manual transmission (all models) are harder to come by and have a low inventory at every dealership. Exterior colors that are hard to find are army green, anything in blue, and barcelona red. Most dealers will take advantage of the popularity of cement and will try to sell them as close to MSRP as possible. I would find another dealer that wants to work hard to earn your business and not shove a Tacoma that doesn't fit your needs down your throat.

very true and indeed. They were trying to sell me a car that they inquire from another dealer but with an upgraded package. Its not that i dont want the upgrade package but its more of i dont need it and i dont want to pay more for something i dont need. But i was able to work them down on the price to about just a little over 1k of the original i have put an order on. Lesson to be learn for me here is they have room to wiggle just gotta work them out.

This would be the 2nd brand new vehicle i bought. The first was a honda accord i bought back in 2017 which i had smooth transaction with because the car was there at the dealership. But with this 2nd one and being my first time customizing a car to my need i wasnt too sure how things work. Not sure if they were really being truthful about not being able to put an order in for the car i customize. But i guess you learn as you go. Thanks for all the input guys much appreciated!

I think you did good. Maybe a few extra items you didn't want but you have them and it doesn't seem like you overpaid for them. If you add the time wasted on ghost trips you avoided, time is money so its a win!
