Go online and message the online sales team(multiple dealerships for best results). They will hassle you far less, give you a better deal, and you can drive off in the truck you want.
This guy just doesn't want to wait to sell a less expensive truck, and unless they want to give a hefty discount on these things you don't want I would try someone else. I get everyone wants these trucks, and the whole "someone will buy it if you don't", but there are dealerships that would be thrilled with any sale. Capitalize on that.

 

I think thats pretty average depending on the rebate amount given. I received about 3k off the msrp plus a $1500 rebate at this time around last year when ordering my truck from texas. I don't what other fees needed to be charged but they sure nailed me for these just to ship the truck to the boston dealer. From what i was informed these fees are standard practice on any new vehicle sold here.
Imo, if your satisfied with the purchase its all that matters.

Here in WA./ID. there was next to nothing on the lot when I was shopping last year. Let alone what I really wanted...

 

I hear ya, I bought my Taco in August 2020 and when I found the truck I wanted...we jumped on it and picked it up the next day.

 

Went online to the 'Build Your Own Toyota / Toyota Configurator'.
Picked out exactly what I wanted - it will let you know what's not available for your particular model/configuration.
Contacted the dealer to make sure I could order one - he said 'Sure - come on in'.
Printed out my sheet, took it in and was in/out in 14 minutes.
Salesman called me yesterday and said he was emailing my VIN to me...he did.
Am I waiting for it? Sure...I'm also getting exactly what I want - and just as importantly not getting/paying for what I don't want.
But you know I look at as it doesn't matter if you buy, trade, bargain, don't bargain, wait, don't wait...whatever....you do you as your happiness and satisfaction with the deal is the only thing that matters.

You should spec the vehicle you want, email all the dealers within a 50 mile radius (if you live in a metro area) and ask for their best price.

They are going to want to know about trades, financing and all that, so it's easier (and more accurate for you to understand) to just tell them you want the 'cash and carry' price.

When someone tries to upsell you like this guy, ask if he's still hustling at McDonalds on the side. When he says 'what?', say you know, supersize that for you today, would you like a hot apple pie, etc etc.

You can't blame him for asking. It's a commissioned job. What you can blame him and the sales 'manager' for is over hustle once you've told them no.

 

SE and Gulf States are the worst regions to buy in. Worth some travel to avoid them IMHO.

Exception: they have on their lot exactly what you want at a price you are willing to pay.

 

Have to agree, unfortunately. In my experience, SE Toyota dealers are difficult to deal with, for the most part. The one closest to me, doesn't even put pictures of inventory on their website. Their business model is to get you physically on the premises.....very old school dealership MO.

 

Texas dealers have photos, but they are stock photos. "Yes sir, it's right here". "Are you sure that is a 6' LONG BED" I learned the hard way to send them a text msg with "send me a photos of truck and of door jam VIN". Short Bed.

The toyota vin tool pulls up what port options are fitted.

Hence my Colorado Road Trip. 1400 miles round trip, but saved about $7000 (traded in a 2019 Highlander).

 

The dealers in my area have more SR models than anything else when I’ve visited them. I wanted a TRD sport premium 2WD but, could only find a TRD sport premium exactly the way I wanted it including color in 4WD so I took it. I figured the 4WD would have better resale even though I would rarely use 4WD.

 

Is it? I've always been told to shoot for appx 10% below MSRP on a new vehicle, more if it's produced domestically. I got 10% below on my 2019 TRD OR Premium + the rebate + a season pass to our local ski resort. Was listed for $42k, walked out the door for just under $36.5k

Not trying to poke anyone in the eye here but $2k under MSRP seems crazy. I'm guessing COVID has seriously f'd w/ Taco pricing?

 

High demand and Covid messing with supply chains. I was shocked that Toyota offered rebates on Tacoma's; the only thing on their lots is base 4 cylinders. Most Texas dealers wanted $5K over MSRP! Gulp. I got a great price on my trade-in, so it's worth the drive. I found great prices up in Oregon & Washington state, 6 ft beds being easier to find.

If you are in Texas, don't have a trade, I'd fly to PNW with camping gear and take two weeks to drive back and see Glacier and Yellowstone.

2019 Trip in my Ford. My sons drove to Santa Cruz. I was working but flew in for a triathlon and had a nice month-long road trip. I will probably do something similar, let them take the truck to Seattle to swap out.

In this current market, yes it is. Just speaking from experience and being in the business as a sales manager for a Toyota Dealership.

 

Depends on where you live. Here in California your lucky to pay msrp. Most dealers add addition markups. High demand, low inventory here. The dealers will let you walk because, the next guy will pay their price.

 

You are 100% correct and that is case pretty much nationwide. Covid has hurt production and demand is high for Tacoma's, 4Runner's, and Tundra's.

Out of curiosity, do you make any sales off of being here on TW? I would think it'd be a great way to generate sales leads.

 

I do not, this is actually the first time I have said anything. I'm on TW for fun and laugh at some of the funny comments I see. I actually work for a one price dealer and give our best price upfront. We can't keep Tacoma's, 4Runner's, and Tundra's on our lot. We sell our Pro's at MSRP instead of marking them up $5,000-$10,000 over MSRP.
