Anyone paint their frames black? And if so, which paint did you use that didn't scratch easily?

Not yet. Just the mount rails. Wiped down with alcohol and used any cheap matte black.

No paint for me, I'm worried about it chipping and looking worse than the clear anodized aluminum. I have thought about putting black shrink tubing over the tubes though.

Black. It becomes light gray when dirty and still look good. Tan would stand out too much and that's all you see not the truck lol . Like a floating topper .

I painted the rails, I didn’t do the folding frame. Just used rustoleum and it’s held up fairly well

I have an MGM with a Black Softtopper. None of the h/w is visible on the outside so I left it alone.

    Well, sir . . . :D

I liked this idea and gave it a shot, esp as my mood lighting was damaged hauling a large load recently. I got the single layer stuff without the waterproof adhesive for obvious reasons:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N6YCXLT
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QS6YFD7

The stuff arrived yesterday and I got the two middle bows done. I'll snap pics later.

The first one that I did was a bit of a pickle due to a bit of adhesive residue from the old LED strip installation and the gathering inside of the bends. The other bow took about half the time. But, getting the shrink wrap over that length with two bends was fun.

I used the clear stuff to cover the LED strip for both protection and not have to see bumps from zip ties on the outside of the ST.

At least my lighting is fixed for the weekend camping fun. We'll see when I can get around to doing the rest of the frame.

I added the clear over my LED strips when I first put them on, and like you mentioned those two bends suck. It does protect them really well though so I think it's worth the hassle. I just added the black tubing to my wish-list and am awaiting your results :hattip:

I plan on "blacking out" the frame as well. Interesting ideas. Original was just going to rattle. Wonder if even a vinyl wrap would suffice?

Just go black. If you don’t clean it it becomes grey . Apply some cleaners/ protectant it comes black again. Win win.

I agree that it was worth it. It gave me something to do and was nearly free from a gift card that we had.

    Check build thread!
Tan imo, black on black makes it look like an suv. That's what I'll be going with for mine.

    Black and tan FTW!

I think the contrast looks nice, plus the dirtier you get the more it matches! :D All the black softoppers I've seen end up looking gray and dingy after awhile.

    Sorry for the delay.

Here's a couple pics. The clear is a bit less pronounced in real life. I had the LED strip on the next bow forward previously. It is way better on the current one.
