Has anyone had any experience in this? I'm widening my search for a truck.

The way I understand it is:
    A. You buy the truck for $28,000 in Oregon with a check from your lender in Washington State.
    B. You leave Oregon with an Oregon title for the truck, and odometer reading and a purchase and sales agreement that lists the price paid.
    C. Once back to Washington you go to DMV, show them the title, odometer reading and a purchase and sales agreement and pay the Washington State "use tax" and transfer the title into a Washington title. Then take the title to your lien holder to hold until its paid in full.

I had an Oregon dealer today ask me for my Washington address so he could figure out the taxes to include in the purchase price, I assume he would then remit those to the State of Washington? It didn't sound right though.

If anyone has done this before between Oregon and Washington, I would appreciate the feedback.

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
Sure. I live in Vancouver WA and buy all my vehicles in Portland OR.
It works either of two ways...
    1. Dealer registers vehicle for you in WA. Under this scenario they collect the WA tax at time of sale. This is really the easiest for you
    2. The dealer sells you vehicle with OR temp registration, about $30. Then you goto WA DMV and bring the sales invoice and write a check for the WA tax and reg fees.

If you are financin then option 1 is best, Less out of pocket cost for you.

Mountainwolf, thank you for your response. I was looking at a truck at a Toyota dealer and they calculated out the price including Washington tax. I then called my local DMV and asked the gal some questions and she got all flustered and then I was hesitant. So basically, a dealer in say Portland has the ability to collect washington tax as a part of the transaction and give me a washington registration and send the title to my lender? I think ideally option #1 would be the best. I just don't want the Toyota dealer to keep my tax money and not remit it and then I get stuck paying it a second time when I go to register the vehicle. How does my local DMV office in Puyallup know that the taxes were paid and remitted? I guess it might say this on the purchase and sales agreement?

And then it got a little stickier with my trade in. Wilsonville Toyota is in podunkville nowhere and they weren't really interested in my BMW therefore their offer was really low on trade in value. I just wasn't up on how this all works and I don't want to get stuck up in Washington with a truck I can't register or have to pay "tax" on it twice.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
I would wait to sell the bimmer privately or at a dealer that is less rural to get the most out of it. I know in the little town I'm in, none of the locals (older land owners and such) would touch one so the dealers won't pay for them either.

Dealers near a state border will often be able to work with you on registering your vehicle properly in your home state. They want to get as many sales as possible, so they dont want to make it difficult for people willing to travel.

Gresham Toyota is great. Highly recommend thei Internet Sales Dept. You can negotiate the whole sale without ever coming in until you pick up. They can't charge you WA tax and keep it t, that's fraud and illegal. Some dealers can register the vehicle for you in WA, others can't or just don't want the hassle. It is really easy either way.

I've done this several times, both ways. Option 1 is definitely preferred and basically like buying a vehicle in state to the buyer, just more paperwork for the dealer.

Hey crashnburn80, how long do you have to wait to register the vehicle in Washington? At what point do you know that Washington has received their money(tax) so you can get your registration?

I guess I still don't understand how it works. The Oregon dealer collects the tax and issues a washington registration and then mails the money or sends the money to the state of washington?

Correct, if the dealer does it they send everything to the state. Just like they would in their own state (if OR collected tax). You do nothing. Your registration and plates arrive by mail to your WA address, you never need to go to the DOL.

If you go with option 2, you have 15 days to go to the DOL to complete the registration and pay the sales tax at the time of registration.

That clears it up for me greatly. The Oregon dealer just collects the tax, remits to Washington DMV and then Washington DMV sends out the plates and stickers.

Having lived in both states I would agree, Option 1 is best. Beaverton Toyota is also another excellent dealership (I got my truck there). I also think it might be best to sell the Bimmer on your own. Even if you only get slightly more than trade-in value.
