    Sup Fellas,

currently in the market for a used 3rd gen tacoma. i have owned 2 other tacoma's in the past, 01 and a 08. both tacoma's were work horses (01 had 370k miles and 08 had 220k)

so i am familiar with how reliable a tacoma is. however i have never purchased a used truck or a vehicle that has been in an accident.

have my eye on a 2016 dual cab OR with no options, 39k miles and has a vehicle report of a rear end accident. drove and inspected the truck and it drives like a new truck. the sticker price is $28,989.

what do you guys think about buying a used truck with a reported accident? if it is worth it...what would you guys pay for it?

    thanks in advance.

If it were me I would look at a new one, be about 5 grand more but no miles and never wrecked.

I think that’s too high a price, if you are set on that truck I’d offer them $26 tops.

Depends on how hars it was hit. Frame damage?
Before i bought it i would take it to a body shop, pay them $100 or so and let them look it over for a half hour. They have no skin in the game so they would be honest.

Never take over someone else’s junk. Unless it’s free. They’re probably dying for someone to come along and take that pos off their hands. Do yourself a favor and buy new. You’ll feel much better. Peace of mind is everything.

Just remember that due to that accident, youll never get top dollar for it even if your a dealer. at 26 OTD like the others have said, thatd be something wrth considering if it was a 4x4!

I got rear-ended by a texting driver in March 2015. Damage amounted to $1,200 for a new rear bumper and some paintwork. If it turns out that the damage to the truck you want was something like what happened to mine, then I say negotiate them down on the price and buy it...

If it was really clobbered and potentially had frame damage, then avoid at all costs!

Most Tacoma’s that are rear ended have frame damage... look for odd gaps between the cab and bed. Also look for cracks in the bed...

As another TW member stated, for a few thousand more - buy a new one.

Also I wouldn’t take a risk with buying one that has been an accident previously unless it was cheap.

    Just my .02

Toyota also has a great deal on financing on new Tacoma's where the used one will have a higher rate.

You do know that even if there is very little damage, it can still be report on CarFax due to a police report or insurance claim, right? Just because a vehicle has been in an accident doesn't mean that it was severely damaged - it could be that a dent had to be knocked out and a small blend paint job.

The whole front end of my truck has been replaced due to an accident, but I guarantee you wouldn't know it other than noticing the missing VIN tags on the body panels.

It was still really low, something like 0.9 or 1.9, would save over used.

Does it have a salvage or rebuilt title or just the accident report?

If it's rebuilt you can get it inspected for damage by a qualified party. I've dealt with lots of salvage vehicles. You can get a very good price on a vehicle that drives like a normal vehicle. But consider:

    1) it's almost impossible to get full coverage on a rebuilt title; most companies will offer partial or none
    2) resale price will always be in the shitter: plan to own it forever

Yep, I knew that. But CarFax doesn't tell you what the damage was. So rather than guess, or be lied to, I'll take my chances on a vehicle that DOESN'T' have any reported accidents...

The only way I would personally consider a vehicle that has been in an accident is if I knew the owner and knew the vehicle before the damage, unless it was an absolute screaming deal and you were keeping it FOREVER.

In these days of constant internet trading between dealers, it is a big mistake to assume that people you deal with over the internet are as honest as you are.

The perceived anonymity means there are many who will screw you over and not have a second thought about it.

Think of all the dirtbags on CL, then think that they are not just on CL.
