I’ve been looking to buy a used 2nd or 3rd gen taco for awhile now to replace/downsize my F350.

I’ve got my eye on two trucks and I’m curious what y’alls thoughts are between the two, if you would buy one or the other for any reason.

2010 DCLB TRD Sport, 103k miles. Has camper shell and rack. Stock wheels, Cooper Discoverer all terrains.

2012 DCLB TRD Sport, 131k miles. Has method wheels and K02s already. Also has camper shell and rack.

The 2010 has a bit of rust underneath from spending some time in NY. The 2012 has a bit of hail damage on the roof (I’m waiting for pics). Both have clean Carfax reports. Both have stock suspension.

The 2012 has a nicer stereo/entertainment, but I can replace that easily. I have some pics of the 2010 undercarriage, which I will try to attach.

Price is almost the same between the two. I would put tires and maybe wheels on the 2010 if I bought it, otherwise in the short term they are about equal. I will likely put Bilsteans on either one.

Are the 30k less miles on the 2010 a better bet than the 2012 with minor hail damage and already having wheels and tires? Thoughts? Concerns? Is that surface rust or does it look deeper?

Undercarriage pics are the 2010. The grey truck is the 2012.

Both are asking around $20k, I haven’t pushed either on price yet. One is dealer and one is private.

I know I could probably get a similar one for $18-18.5k here in CO without the topper, but the color matched topper does add about $1.5k value for me as they are scarce here used and I would have to drive to Phoenix to get a 1.2k one.

    More pics of the 2010.

    My vote 2012.

The rust isnt that bad on the 2010 but it does look like they just rattled can over the rust without getting rid of it.

Thanks! I haven’t seen the underside of the 2012 yet. If it’s comparable to the 2010 or worse, I’ll likely go with the 2010.

Rust isn't too bad really, could do some work and get rid of most of it

That's what I was hoping, but I'm not as familiar as most around here with the Taco's rust issues so I wanted to ask.

Any reasons to pick the 2012 over the 2010 based on the updates that were done with the 2012 model year? I know 2012 got an interior upgrade, including the entertainment display, and got rid of the orange gauge cluster, but I'm not sure what other major things were done that people like/don't like.

I would always go with cosmetic damage over structural damage when choosing a truck. A rusted frame is no bueno in my book.

Do you mean the hail damage vs more rust?

Yeah - Hail is cosmetic, rust is structural. If you bust a frame, you can't use a truck - no matter how it looks!

I would not even consider the truck with the rust. It looks like the PO tried to cover it with rattlecan. The rust is much worst than it looks and whoever will be doing any suspension work on this truck in the future will likely rather have a co-worker wearing steel toed boots to kick them in the balls.

Pass on the rust bucket. The rust has already set in.

    Thanks fellas/ladies, much appreciated.

Do you think the rust on the 2012 is just surface and okay? It's these two pictures.

    Good to know, thank you.

I've helped a friend put a hitch on her '96 forerunner, I know exactly what you mean!
