Hello im looking at two Tacoma's to purchase as my first vehicle/truck.
My first pick was a 2009 access cab with the 4 cyl 2.7 liter 5 speed, 264k with two owners, the truck runs good and seems solid other than when i start to push the clutch in, like a 1/4 way it starts to squeal just slightly and not to loud...
The second option i was looking at was another 2009 but this one is a TRD with the 4.0 and a speed equipped, 183k one owner...
Im mainly wanting the trd cause itll hold its value better and longer, but i dont know how reliable the 6 speed is compared to the 5 speed, or the 4.0 compared to the 2.7...
I work as a steel framer and will put close to 120 miles a day, wont be towing much and just be using it for usual outdoor activities, maybe occasional road trips from Montana to Seattle, i come from a ford family and no nothing about toyotas so any info and advice is appreciated!! Thanks again!

    Hi xbluexile,

Welcome to the forum! I'm on my 5th Toyota pickup truck (all have been 4cyl) + my family has a couple of 4runners (4.0 V6 and 4.7 V8). IMO (without knowing price) the TRD is the clear option here. Lower miles, and that 6 cyl is really a nice engine. The clutch squeal sounds suspect, that might be a throwout bearing issue if you didn't notice the clutch slipping, otherwise. I'm not sure where you are located, but check for rust on the frame (particularly the S-Curve where the frame begins to bend upwards to meet the bed), check the fenders for any rot, look around for leaks, and just listen for any suspect noise/vibration in the engine/drivetrain when you test drive. That's about the best you can do without taking it to a mechanic. You don't really need to be concerned about 2.7 vs 4.0 for longevity, both engines are high quality.

    Good luck!

I'm partial to the late 2nd Gen's....for me....

would have to be (and is) the 4.0L w/manual...even with quirky ratios

Now short bed or long bed is another question ?

Double cab only for me.....just need & like the extra space

Only reason to have a 2.7 is if, like me, you are addicted to reg. cabs. I love my reg. cab Taco, but hate the weak little 2.7. But you can't get a reg cab with a 4.0.

With those two choices I'd probably opt for the lower mile 1-owner TRD. What are price differences?

That said, do not listen to the people shitting on the 2.7. It's an equal or better engine in every way except power. The only reason you'd hate it is if you like to haul ass or tow heavy loads. It's a beast off-road.
