I gotta 05 Tacoma ext. cab w/16x7 stock steel wheels w/ 285/75/16 tires that rub inside a lil when turned all the way.Truck has 3" lift. I'm buying 17" FJ rims. When I order new 17" tire do I need to get a lower profile tire? Or do FJ rims have enough offset to stay w/285/75/17 ? Buying all of this in morning. HELP .

I still rub with the FJs 285/70/17 Cooper st MAXX
But I don't have aftermarket UCA and my alignment is okay not perfect which likely causes the rubbing. I rub on the uca and rear half of lower control arm at full lock.

I can't answer your question specifically about 285's but I have an 06 with FJ wheels and 265/70/17 tires. No problems with any rubbing. I had the same size tires before I switched wheels and didn't have any problems with stock rims either. No lift on mine. I do like the wider stance that the FJ wheels give to the truck though.

Both the stock steel wheels and the FJ alloys are the same +15mm offset, so a tire of the same width (285) will rub on both.

You can install wheel spacers, but then the tire will start rubbing on the fender flare at full steer. You can start cutting away the plastic. The easier way out is to get 265/70-17 tires. No spacers. No rubbing. Some tires are available in 275/70-17 size, which would fit fine also.

The FJ wheels should have a +30 backspacing instead of the standard Tacoma backspacing of +15. This pushes the tires out about 1/2" on each side.

^Stock 17" FJ alloys have +15 mm offset. Tacoma 16" TRD OR alloys have +32 mm offset. Tacoma 16" SR5 steel wheels have +15 mm offset. Numerically higher offset value = wheel is set further inward.

To get a wider stance, you'd want wheels with 0 mm offset or negative offset, but then the wheel and tire will be steering over a larger scrub radius, so fender clearance becomes an issue. With larger tire sizes, even cutting away all the fender flare plastic will not be enough - a cab mount chop (CMC) becomes necessary.

285/70/17 duratracs. rub UCA at full lock but that's it. No cab mount chop and no fender cutting. Just remove your front flaps. But, this is the second set of FJ/Tacoma combo I've had.

Sorry, I was talking about the stock 17" Sport rims and I said it backwards. The Sport rims have a 5.5" (30mm) backspacing and the 17" FJ's have a 4.5" (15mm) backspacing. I know when I put them on my truck it pushed the tires further out of the fender. For 265/70/17's there are no problems.

I hope it all works well for you.
