I'm very happy with my HP desktop (Intel) and my wife's HP laptop (around $500 from Costco, AMD) is awesome.

I've had issues with every Dell I've owned or used. My last company had a contract with Dell, and if I used sleep/hibernate, it was always a coin-toss whether or not it would wake up.
Many times I'd have to pull the battery to force a full reboot. This was the case with my wife's laptop, and all three of the Dell machines that I used at work.

Okay so I almost major goofed. Can tablets print to a wireless printer? I'll need to be able to print out school work.

I've never really liked Dell. Never was fast enough for me.

Man, its a hard call. The Surface 1 was said to be choppy at times and not responsive. I personally liked it and thought it could do everything I needed it to.

The Asus has a few less features than the Surface... I cant really say.

My desktop dumped its power supply last August.
I built it in 2001, replaced the motherboard in 2004, and upgraded the hard drives in 2006.

It was built as a higher end gaming machine, but ultimately was just used for web/forums and photo editing/storage.

Ya, my new HP smokes it, but it's just icing on the cake. The old machine was and still would be more than adequate for anything I'm doing.

As long as the surface can print documents, I think that's the winner for me. I love the look of it as well.

They may be able to, but I really don't think you're going to be happy with the limitations of a tablet for school.

Why's that? All it's needed for is typing papers really.

    Storage, ergonomics.

I know you can run a keyboard, but I'm barely tolerant of notebook keyboards and can't imagine using the more compact Surface keyboard.
Then there's the storage limitations when you don't have a hard drive. I'm not a fan at all of "cloud storage"

Yeah, it comes with a keyboard. I think i'm going to give it a try, if all else fails i'll just keep it and use my mom's laptop when I need to type a paper (she's getting a tablet)
Thanks for letting me know though man

the cheap microsoft surface does not run a full version of windows. for most people this is not a big deal, but for some it will be. Their may or may not be drivers for the printer for the surface rt. It is still a very nice product however.

That said the asus runs full windows 8.1. It also comes with Microsoft Office preinstalled.

I used to own a surface pro, and with the exception of the battery life it was a great product. The surface rt will have better battery life, but the compatability potentials scared me away from it.

Full version, or demo version that opens in read-only without purchase?

Granted, the student discount makes the basic student version of Office quite affordable, and possibly still in the OP's budget.
Personally, when I bought my wife's HP notebook, I knew that I needed to upgrade Office on my desktop (I was still running an old version that did not support .docx/.xlsx), so I bought the 3-license version of Home and Student 2010. I think it was like $140 total.

Held off on upgrading the desktop because I knew I would be upgrading "soon"... ended up with the crash I mentioned above so I'm glad I held off. I now have a spare Office license for when I buy myself a notebook next year.
