My dealer/salesperson was wise enough to figure out the tax in state of purchase vs state of registration. It allowed me to pay the lower tax...

Where I bought in Oregon they do not have state sales tax so I paid my taxes and registration to my local DMV. You will receive a temporary registration to drive home. The dealership sends your paperwork back to your local DMV. The only things you will need to do are have your truck weighed at a weigh station, have your truck smogged, and have the vin verified (mine was done by my local DMV for free). The dealership took a couple weeks to send the paperwork to my DMV. They wait until your financing gets funded before sending over your paperwork.

I bought mine in OR as well, my dad lives there and I used his address to register mine at his house. If you think about it why do we have to pay sale tax in one state if we didnt buy it there. If I bought a TV in OR do I need to pay tax where it is used?

I dont get the whole tax deal on vehicles bought out of state. Im lucky in that the area I live doesnt seem to care I havea out of state plate on my truck.

My DMV accepted to COO for the weight Certification. Saved me time and money. (Yes, California)

    Lucky you.

I live in WA and bought my truck in OR as well. Even though i have relatives live in OR, but WA patrol/police is tracking closely. If they see a vehicle with OR license plate parking at a WA resident too long/often, they will question and the fine is big if get caught.

So, I had to pay close to $3.5k (9.6%) in tax and registration

    Actually Yes!

It's called "Use Tax" and you are supposed to report this in your state income tax. But I bet 99.999999% people don't.

Same here. I showed the DMV the Manufacture Certificate of Origin and didn't need weight cert.

I just had mine weighed at a local truck stop. It was $10. I didn't want to risk going to the DMV only for them to tell me that I needed the weight certificate.

I'm looking for the best deal on a 2017+ trd off-road Tacoma. Any dealership recommendations? I live out of Florida and I'm willing to go to any state for pickup.

You can try Stevinson Toyota East and/or mountain states Toyota here in Denver metro. They will give a price well under invoice by simply calling or emailing them. No negotiation necessary but obviously these guys are half way across the country for you.

Most dealers are willing to deal now on Tacoma’s. When I bought my truck inventory was low so no dealers would budge much off of sticker in my area. I would use the method that I listed on this post to hit up your local dealers. More than likely you’ll find your deal closer than you think.

The tax laws vary from state to state.

Oklahoma DMV advised me not to pay the tax out of state, no matter what. Said they would charge me again, even IF the dealership/other state did not forward the taxes back and I had proof that I paid.

I did my own research (DMV and Tax Commission websites) for each state I considered a purchase in. Some had a waiver form to fill out, and would not collect tax if I was a non-resident of that state.

Utah had a waiver, but the dealership insisted on collecting anyway.

Oregon has no state tax, so that made it simple. Just pay back in Oklahoma.

California... taxed at it's first place of use, so essentially, if I flew out and drove it home.... I used it in California first and would have to pay California tax. If I had it shipped, then I would not pay California taxes

Alabama (where I ended up buying) had the waiver. Still, there laws are set up that if an Alabama resident is allowed to come to the purchasers state, and not pay taxes there, then they are allowed to come to Alabama and not pay Taxes. On the other hand, if the purchasers home state would make an Alabama resident pay taxes, then Alabama would make the purchaser pay (up to a certain amount, the rest to be collected back in the home state).

It was a lot of research. DMV sites, Tax Commission websites, lots of searching on each, and even a few phone calls to get me pointed in the right direction.

Do the homework!! Could save you from a 'double dip' situation!!

Oof, that’s a good call. Thankfully the dealer I bought from in Utah did forward the taxes to CO and it wasn’t a problem, but worth knowing beforehand.
