I know this may sound out of the blue but I had a buddy with the same problem very similar to yours less than 800 miles and vibration with the buzzing ended up changing the universal joints and completely fixed even tho it was a new truck

The driveline vibrations on mine have been more pronounced lately. I notice them especially when merging under light acceleration to get onto the highway at aroun 1900 to 2100 RPMs. Super fucking annoying.

Once it drops below 1800 or so, I do not notice them at all. It's a rhythmic "waaaaaa waaaaa waaaa" almost reminiscent of the Needle bearing issue but obviously under different circumstances (plus I had the ECGS bushing installed)

FWIW (and yes, I know I am not supposed to be posting in the 3rd gen forum as I do not own one) I drove a 2016 with 9600 miles on it today and while digesting the experience did some back-of-a-napkin calculations--and found that when running in the Atkinson emulation mode the effective displacement of the 2GR-FKS engine is reduced to 1.17641 L--let's be generous and call it 1.2 L.

I believe this accounts for the "buzziness" reported by many and experienced myself in now 3 test drives of 2016 (2) and 2017 (1) 3.5 L slushbox Tacomas, here are the numbers and calculations.

    engine dimensions:
    • bore: 94 mm
    • stroke: 83 mm
    • rod length "guesstimated" as 140 mm
    calculated values:
    • cylinder area (cm²) = 9.4^2 *pi /4 = 69.3978 cm²
    • displacement per cm of stroke = 69.3978 cm³
    • displacement per stroke = 69.3978 * 8.3 = 576.0016 cm³
    (validation of the above: displacement for 6 cylinders = 576.0016 * 6 = 3456.0095 cm³ = 3.456 L)

Note the following does not consider reduced flow during periods of partial intake valve opening and closing, or the effect of vacuum and inertia of the air charge mass
    (that's the back-of-a-napkin part).

In "Atkinson" mode the intake valve
opens @ 33°ATDC -- after 0.8532 cm of downward piston travel [intake] -- (7.4468 cm of downward travel [intake] remains)
closes @ 105° ABDC -- after 4.6377 cm of upward piston travel [reverse intake] -- (3.6621 cm of upward travel [compression] remains)

The intake valve opens with 7.4468 cm of downstroke remaining:
    ∴ air volume ingested before BDC = 69.3978 * 7.4468 = 519.7703 cm³

However after BDC, on the upstroke, the intake valve remains open for 4.6377 cm of piston travel:
    ∴ 69.3978 * 4.6377 = 323.7013 cm³ of the intake charge is expelled

Leaving an effective displacement of 196.069 cm³ per cylinder; or just 1176.41 cm³, 1.176 L for all six cylinders--while operating in "Atkinson" mode.

While 1.2 L is enough to keep a 4,000 truck moving at a constant 60 to 70 mph, but there's not a whole lot extra left...

    ---------------------------------------
If anyone has any specific information regarding the conditions upon which the Atkinson emulation mode is activated I would like to know what has been found. TIA

I have the " waaaaa waaaaaa waaaaaa" very pronounced at 72mph have you determined the cause?

Thats exactley what mine does, I also had the ecgs bushing done, and is does sound simmilar to that. And its with slight accelration in 5th speed, when it shifts into 6th it fades away, and will not do it in 4th speed. I thought it was the drive line, as I have a 2 in rear lift, but I took the driveline out and ran it in 4x4 and it made no difference.
I am convinced its the Transmition.
As any other wa, wa, wa noise it would still make the noise reguardless of the gear you are in. I even just had the tires reballanced and checked wheel bearings.
Its the Tranny for sure, drives me nuts.

Tell me about your suspension set up. What are you running in the rear? Do you have shims or CB drop?

In the meantime, embrace the wah wah

Nope. No shims. It vibrated before just the same as after the lift. Tried a cb drop for kicks and it was a non factor. Removed it.

Thanks for your analysis. What is the cause of the buzzing?

I've been experiencing a shimmy in my steering wheel, side to side "play" or "vibration" at 70mph+ since I purchased the vehicle new 3 months ago. It's not constant though, it will be there at some points then not be there at others. I ended up getting aftermarket wheels which magnifies this issue. I had the aftermarket wheels re-balanced and the issue is still present. Have taken my truck to the Dealer twice, once on aftermarket wheels (they blamed the balance) and on stock wheels just yesterday, and they said they couldn't feel anything and I must be just feeling road "noise".

I'm wondering if this buzzing is similar to what I'm feeling, I can feel the vibration in my hands and cab of the truck, but you can moreso so it in the steering wheel if you let go while on the highway.

Wider wheels with less backspace and more poke? Wider tires?
    Ever had it aligned?
Will a bump on one side make it pull a certain direction?
How's front inside tire wear look?
