I think you mean the opposite: Otto is for power and Atkinson is low power and efficiency but the rest makes sense

Hi all, I have a 2017 double cable long bed that I purchased in Dec 2017. It is a TRD off road equipped truck. As most of my driving is local and just short trips any vibrations I felt I attributed to the stiffer suspension and feeling all toad imperfections. However, on Christmas Eve I drove approx 150 miles to visit family and the majority of the drive was on Interstate highways. Both going and coming I began to feel vibrations, at first in the floorboard, then in my seat, and then through my elbow that was resting on the door armrest.

I called the dealer and brought it in to be looked at and their service manager said he test drove it but couldn’t feel any vibration. He suggested that I bring it in the following week and leave it with them so he could have his master tech look a it. I brought it in on Jan 2nd and went for a test drive with their master tech and he said he felt the vibration I was talking about. They gave me a loaner and the tech said he would take care of it. BTW I mentioned the TSB that addresses the vibration issues on the 2016’s that was amended in Oct 2017 to cover the 2017’s. I believe it is tsb 000171-16_rev. I was told that the tsb excludes Tacoma’s equipped with the off road packages, which in my mind shouldn’t matter.

Nonetheless, the dealer just called and they said that their master tech went over my truck and could find nothing wrong and that he also road tested three other similar trucks they had on their lot, and they all exhibit the same body vibration. They are concluding that the truck is working s it is supposed to work. I told them that from what they are telling me, there apparently is an inherent design flaw in these trucks and I guess the next step is to escalate the issue up to corporate.

I’m going tomorrow to pick up my truck. Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The truck only had 1319 miles when I brought it in to the dealer.

Look for any loose cables - mine had what I think is the throttle cable rattling against the TC and that was a source of a lot of my vibration.
Running premium fuel also resulted in a much smoother drive and I've been running VPower for the last 6 months exclusively (also cuts down on the chirping from the fuel pump)
The rest was exhaust related, and I toned it down a bit by putting a damper just before the muffler.

I hated my truck for the first several months due in very large part to the rough vibes. Now the vibes are what I'd consider "normal" FWIW

Toyota had my truck for a few days as well and just said "normal" like you were told...

Hey! I put three on it. Smoothed it out really nice. One just in front of the muffler towards the front of the truck. And the other two at points of intersection. So where two pipes come together I put one. And where the pipe stepped up like an "S" shape.

Grab a 2 1/2" exhaust pipe clamp from your auto shop. Pickup some lock nuts to double nut it for safety. Just put the damper on with one bolt. Pretty easy :)

This youtube video explains back pressure. Which helped me decide where to put the dampers. He mentions the points of where pressure builds up.

Thanks! I probably should mention I really don't know what I am talking about. haha!
But what do you think? I thought that high efficiency means more power because an engine that produces low power is an engine that is being inefficient because the sole purpose of an engine is to produce power so high efficiency means higher power and low efficiency means lower power. Right? Because you wouldn't say that an engine that creates low power is being efficient. That would be an inefficient engine. Does that make sense?

I don't know, that's how I thought about it. But I have little to no knowledge on this stuff. Either way, though, the hypothesis still seems to make sense. I bet Toyota knows what is wrong.

I've got one of these right now, which of the three places you put one would you consider the most important? In front of the muffler?

I've only put one on and I put it just before the muffler and it made a lot of difference. There's still a small amount there but that alone reduced the exhaust vibes by probably 60% and could probably get more of them out if/when I add more dampers...

Sad to report, but this (so far) HAS NOT worked for me :(:(:(

I tried both in front of the muffler, and just ahead of the y-tube (see pics). I also tried getting the loose cable off of the TC as Bshammer0 notes (used a zip tie around some heat shielding), and no difference. I also tried cleaning the Maf. Alas, my gas pedal is still the worlds worst sex toy

I did order two more dampers though, so I can try more locations. It's a cheap enough solution to try the "throw money at it" approach. Still, I worry that this is a transmission related problem, as the vibrations are far more subdued.

Just stumbled upon this thread & glad I did. I have the floor board/gas pedal buzz at interstate speeds. Going to install the damper. Not a big concern honestly but if the damper helps perfect.

i posted some pics a year ago showing how i applied the sound deadener to the pedal and the firewall where it mounts to. i had the vibe from very first day. so at 300 miles i tried the dynamat cuz i had some and figured what the hell. i swear ive never looked back at the vibes again. i do travel 98% of the time on flat grounds so im not in the rpm range of the buzz for an extended period of time. i just find it odd no one else has reported doing the same fix with positive results as i did.post #2368
