Yeah, there's plug ins and apps for stuff like that but sometimes it's more of a pain than it's worth. That's why I stick to WAV. As long as you backup your Windows Media Player database or the iTunes database it's a non issue.

Well, after going through the "Apple Lossless" conversion of a good portion of my songs, i can honestly say that its EASY to tell a significant difference in the sound quality. The lossless versions (while still probably not as good a a .WAV file) are so much crisper and "fuller". Thanks for the help.

Give it another couple months, and then subscribe to Apple's Itunes Match.... auto upgrade to 256 kbps AAC

Apple Lossless is all I try to import.

However a 320 kbps mp3 sounds very good as well

Apple Lossless is just that... lossless. Much like a .wav file. However the Apple Lossless compression is much more efficient (read: smaller file) than a .wav file

I'm not exactly sure what that means either.

If you have a 128 kbps mp3 file and "upgrade" it to a 256 kbps AAC, it won't sound any better... it'll just take up more drive space.

You can't add back lost signal to a lossy file.

i know that when you "convert" from regular apple files to the lossless, it actually screates a second copy of the song in a much higher bitrate. For instance, i made a lossless copy of a 128kbs Counting Crows Song (that i downloaded from itunes) and the copy "said" it was 900kbs (900-something, i don't remember the exact number). When played one after the other, there was SIGNIFICANT difference. I'm not 100% sure, but i THINK iTunes re-downloads into the higher bit rate if you own the song. i have not yet tried it on a song i didn't download from iTunes though.

As a side note, the converted files i have been making do, in fact, take up significantly more space on my iPhone....so i can only imagine the are new bitrate versions of the same songs.

say what....neither will sound great on a good system, but 256 will sound better than the 128

If you convert a 128 kbps mp3 to a 256 kbps mp3, they will sound exactly the same. Only the 256 kbps mp3 will be larger in size.

Once you compress a file into a lossy format such as an mp3, there's no "getting back" the signal you lost.

Now if you go back and import that original file as a 256 kbps mp3 then yes, it will sound better than what the 128 kbps mp3 sounded like.

I have noticed the same problem in my truck since I upgraded the stereo. I have been downloading 320kbps MP3, but they still sound compressed on the new system. I have an Alpine CDA-117 head unit and am wondering if there is any way to play FLAC on it? Can putting Rockbox or similar on my Ipod classic 160 gig give that flexibility, or am I stuck with WAV's?

I could be wrong, but i thought we were talking the itunes match thing a ma jig. where they replace your 128 file with a 256 file.

i have always just coverted my flac files

If you are using an iPod convert the wav files to apple lossless files.

Same exact sound quality in a smaller sized file. It'll save you a lot of disk space in the long run

I was talking about the match thing a ma jig too.

If they can somehow read your library and truly replace your file with a higher bitrate file, then of course it'll sound better. I just thought that's impossible for Apple to do with copyright laws and all.

I was under the impression that if they just "up converted" your 128 kbps mp3 to 256 kbps, then you will gain absolutely nothing in terms of sound quality.
