CA Ammo sales

So I haven’t bought ammo or a gun in over 5 years so I’m lost on Ca ammo laws. I was told by one person once I clear the cfars I can buy ammo of any caliber. Another person told me I can only buy ammo for guns (calibers I have registered with the state)

For example. On Tuesday I’m purchasing a new 12g for waterfowl and after that I can only buy 12 gauge. Unless I register all my previously legally purchased firearms since their outside that 5 year window.

man, if that is actually a law in CA, it is worse than I thought it was and I feel sorry for you.

 

Yeah it’s pretty bad. I went in to purchase waterfowl loads and was denied because I haven’t bought anything in the last 5 years and I had moved since my last firearm purchase. Pretty annoyed.

 

You can buy ammo of any caliber contingent on you passing the check. Since you may not have any firearms recorded in the AFS, you may need to do another version of the ammo check.

Thanks for the reading. I submitted a thing online and it’s currently in process. According to Reddit it may take weeks. Sigh, however I’m buying a new shotgun on Tuesday so I was told that would make me automatically eligible to buy ammo once I take possession. Such a pain in the ass. Just wanted some dam #2 waterfowl loads.

Once you're in the system from buying a firearm recently, you can buy whatever caliber you want, after passing a background check for each purchase.

 

Illegal to import more than 50 rds into CA unless you're certified, or moving into the state.

 

Also if you purchase ammo at the time of gun sale the $1.00 fee is waved and its an easy process.

Your shotty purchase next week should suffice. Not sure what/why you submitted anything extra to cfars.

 

You have to pass a background check to buy ammo??? That's crazy. Commiefornia! We can walk into some gas stations down here and get a 6 pack of beer, a pack of smokes, and a box of .357 mag ammo.

 

I hear if you have your sister/cousin/wife with you they wave the tax on the smokes in Alabama

 

There's no ammo on the shelves here in Oregon. Apparently there's some sort of ammo shortage. My buddy recently bought a 12 gage, 9mm and a .38 and went home with 2 boxes of 9mm. I guess I'm out of the ammo loop as I haven't had to buy ammo in a couple years.

 

was able to buy ammo today. Submitting a firearm on the afms was sufficient.

 

it’s the same here as far as shortage. I haven’t bought ammo in 5 years. However I didn’t have steel shot so I needed that. Was able to get today, if i waited till a few weeks who knows if I would of been able to.

 

My local bimart had a about 2ft of the shelf full of 5.56 green tips for $9/box. But a 2 box limit on each caliber.

I'm sure you know now but you can buy whatever caliber you want. Its not dependent on what you own.

If any of your info changes (address) you will need to update cfars again. Biggest issue with the system is when people have a suffix on their name as the ca fsc does not have a box for it but the firearm dros does so it gets put in weird locations to satisfy the background check system and then will not match up when purchasing ammo later.
