A few additions to make me feel cool.
When I left CA (was stationed there) I registered my 2007 Tacoma in NV. I was still working in CA a week or so every month so I turned my CA plates in as you are instructed at the DMV in CA by hand. Three years later they withheld my CA state refund because they said I had not paid the registration on that truck. I had sold it 18 months or so before it, I had to get proof that I had sold the truck, prior to that had registered it in another state. Then they wanted to fine me for not turning in the plates. It was a whole load of BS. Took me a year to deal with them.

The worst was I used to leave my truck in SoCal and drive my company truck. My NV registration came due and I live in a smog county so I had to drive 530 miles to SoCal, get in my truck and drive another 200ish to Vegas so I could smog my truck in NV then return my truck to my office and drive 530 miles home. So they all have some BS.

    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly a 1998 SR5 PU, 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4

So apparently, is DMV now informing vehicle owners getting their registration renewal if there are any active manufacturers’ recalls or TSB’s on their vehicles? I had Toyota take care of all my TSB’s, so that is probably why I was able to get renewed this year. I bet this all happened due to the Takata airbag fiasco.

Ugh, another hurdle for do it yourself repairs, and one more step towards annual car inspections!

The reason why my registration service is thriving. People don't want to spend half a day at the DMV. They rather pay a small fee and be out in 5 minutes with their reg and tags in hand. Oh yeah, we do take all forms of payments too!

Vehicle manufacturers don’t spend millions of dollars on recalls because they want to.

Well, guess you just don't have to pay them if they are refusing to register it.

Pro tip: if you have a topper on your truck in California your registration changes and is less money.

It doesn't change on it's own. The topper has to be permanently attached, then you have to apply for a regular plates and surrender your commercial plates. I'd rather keep my commercial plates and be able to park in yellow zones and actually transport stuff in the bed (can't with personal plates).
