Tracking down a P0141 code, following FSM troubleshooting diagnostics procedure, found that the truck has 2 cat's. According to all information i've been able to access this is a California emissions setup. The truck was bought new at a dealership in Wisconsin in 2002, and licensed there until I bought it in April 2013 and brought it to Minnesota.

First question is why would a midwest truck have Cali emissions?

Second, and more importantly is can I change it to except Cali emissions by changing out piping from Y-pipe to intermediate pipe (catalytic converter)? Or do the ECU and associated sensors also differ between Cali and except Cali emissions systems?

The truck has 242000 miles, and when the cat goes, I can only assume that buying 2 will be more expensive than buying one. I would also assume that the Cali emissions system would be more restrictive.

I have attached a diagram from the FSM and my truck most definitely has the same setup as the second exhaust system.

    Thank you for any input.

Where ever the truck was sold is where the emissions is set up for. Under the hood it will say. Federal/california-etc.

As for how to know what the computer will and won't except. I'm sorry, I just don't know. Both cats appear to be within the sensors, which tells me something has to be there, once again not enough knowledge to tell you what you can get away with. Sorry.

Cali is considered the catch all of 50 state emissions, that way the vehicle can be sold where ever it ends up.

I think after a certain year, all tacomas were / are California compliant with regard to emissions. I bought my car (2003 tacoma) from out of state (Nevada) and it has all the California compliant emissions, as well as the stickers that say Cali-compliant.

Some of this Some of that
You can't change it to run on federal emmissions. Toyota went to Cali emissions in 01. I had to replace the cats on my 02, I used magnaflow 50 state cats with no problem. I replaced both of them as I figured if I replaced just one it would wear out faster.. I got them from autoanything and got like $100 off
